Homeless on Market Street between Van Ness to 3rd street and the Tenderloin after dark. Generally they are safe and only beg or play outdoor chess(see them at Powell St.), but some are truly drugged out and can get violent. If you don't provoke them - by insulting them, you should be OK. I've seen homeless attack each other at night and with bloodshed, but never tourists or bystanders.
The Tenderloin is not as bad as others make it, it even has nice restaurants and good hotels, just don't look like you have money to lose after dark.
NEVER TRAVEL WITH ANYONE THAT HAS A COCCAINE OR DRUG ADDICTION...IN FACT JUST STAY HOME IF YOUVE GOT ONE IN YOUR LIFE..LOL..SERIOUSLY MISSION DISTRICT AREAS AT NIGHT AND MARKET ST AND VAN NESS STREETS AT NIGHT...WOW..BUMS GALORE..SCARY ONES TOO!!!
Don't give money to the homeless, everyone here has one angle or another, whereas, there are few true hard times cases, most are looking for a quick hand out. Besides, you will go broke if you give everyone you encounter 'spare change', there are just too many beggars for that.
There are TONS of bums asking for money everywhere. There's some craaaaaaaaaaaazy drunks/drug addicts just drinkin n smokin weed on the streets. My friends and I had quite an experience with a drunk bum, his 40, radio and the trolley tracks. They're pretty interesting!
Be aware of possible scams against tourists. We were approached on the street near Pier 39 by someone who first appeared to represent a city tourism agency, quickly flashed some kind of ID, and asked where we were from and how we were enjoying San Francisco. He then pased us a clipboard like it was a guest book, but turned out to then solicit money to feed orphans. This may have been legitimate, but the approach seemed like a scam and we declined... Suggest you research any organization before you give them any cash and avoid ever opening your wallet on the street.
on the powell street there're many stores sell radios tv sets and cd players....
some of the employees are bad mannered
my friends and I have been kicked out of the store just because we looked around without buying anything...
The S.F.C. Police department officers are so polite and friendly that they even offered to pose for this photo!
