Having been founded by the Spanish in the 18th century, the area that is now the City of San Jose had a strong religious presence. A small adobe church was established in the village and dedicated to Saint Joseph in 1803, making it the first parish in the state of California. The current structure was built in 1877, after earlier ones were lost due to earthquakes and fires. It is one of San Jose's fine historical buildings.
Classical music concerts are held here from time to time, so it is worth checking their calendar.
