SJSU is the founding school of the State University of California system and has an enrollment of 30,000 students. Founded in 1862, this is the oldest public university in California, while the oldest private university is just a few miles away in Santa Clara. The SJSU Spartans are in NCAA Division IA for football, and who cares about other sports?
One of the most unique buildings on campus is Tower Hall. Constructed in 1871 it was the home of the California Normal School, a predecessor to San Jose State. This building once housed the large bell that now sits on display nearby. At the start of the Fall Semester you might notice a chair suspended on a plank out a window of the tower, 65 feet above ground... this is the Seat of Wisdom on the end of the Plank of Courage, an annual fraternity ritual.
Famous alumni include Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, former baseball player Ken Caminiti, NFL QBs Steve DeBerg and Jeff Garcia, gorilla lover Dian Fossey, Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, the Smothers Brothers, MLB commissioner Peter Ueberroth, and NFL coaches Dick Vermeil and Steve Walsh.
San Jose State University is located right in the heart of downtown San Jose. Give yourself an hour or two to stroll the grounds. This is a beautiful campus with a spanish flair in its archecture design. Beautiful gardens and oak and palm trees all around.
