Located in the historic Los Rios District is The Ramos House built circa 1881 and was home to one of the oldest families in Orange County. The house was built with a trap door in the floor for escape from banditos. It now houses the Ramos House Cafe. The seating for entire restaurant is solely on the patio and they are open for breakfast and lunch only. The restroom is designed to look like an outhouse (just a bit more upscale though.) The chef and owner also lives in the house. Note: This past November we were heading over to the Ramos house for lunch. Upon our arrival I noticed many empty chairs and tables. We asked to see a menu and we told that they were only serving brunch at over $25 a person. This was a Saturday, a good deal of people followed us over to the Ramos house and did not buy into anything at all because of the Prixe Fixe Menu. He lost at least 10 people plus ourselves by limiting his menu in such a fashion. Word to the owner: Regular menus are just fine with many of us!!
Wow, the menu is limited to a few items and it changes. I had the Onion Flower Soup with Blue Cheese Pop-overs and a basket of Sweet Potatoe French Fries. The Beet salad is also recommended. The Ramos House built in 1881 is now a restaurant and home of it's chef owner, John Q. It sits on the oldest street (with residents) in California.Located in the historical Rios District of San Jaun Capistrano. This is a very unique award winning restaurant with a casual rustic setting. Breakfast and lunch are served Tuesday through Sunday on the patio under the shade of a 100 year old Mulberry tree. The food is completely home made and fresh. The ice cream is churned by hand, the biscuits fresh baked, the jam home made and the gourmet food seasoned with fresh herbs from Johns garden . Resident-Owner and Chef, John Q. was trained at the CIA (Culinary Institute of American) and won many awards .Ramos House is ranked the #1 OC restaurant by both Zagot & OC Weekly. I have been a regular since it opened and everything I have tried on the Ramos House menu is excellent. Even if it sounds like an ordinary dish it is always extraodinary in taste and presentation! UPDATE: sadly the 100 yr old Mulberry tree died. Several umbrellas and a Weeping Willow tree have replaced it. Leave a Comment

One of my favorite restaurants in SJC is Sarduccis. It is located in the historical train depot. I eat here often, usually for lunch, in the sunny courtyard.I like to sit by the trickling fountain and when luck would have it, watch cute birds taking a bath. At night or on a cold day it's nice to sit inside close to one the fireplaces. The Sitting Room with fireplace or the Station Master room are both small and private and are a great choice for a romantic dinner or small intimate party. The spacious Main Dining room has a large fireplace at one end and a wall of windows looking across the railroad tracks into the Historical Los Rios District. Anywhere you choose to dine you will enjoy the good food and friendly staff.
My favorite salads are the Summer Salad ,with Rasberry Vinegarette, and the Steak or Seafood Cobb Salad with Dill Dressing. The Greek Gyros, pasta dishes and the Seafood Crepes are all very good as well. And almost all the entrées come with a complimentary basket of fresh baked sourdough bread. This All American Diner has a 50's theme. The first Rubys Diners were built on the end of piers in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Seal Beach. I remember walking to the end of a pier with friends to get hamburgers, old fashioned shakes, and a big basket of fries smothered with chili and cheese. The kids meals came in a classic car shaped box or a Rubys frisbee.Even thought this is an old fashioned hamburger joint, my favorite dish is the delicious Chicken Pot Pie. It has chunks of chicken with gravy in a flakey buttery crust... yum : P The SJC Rubys does not have the ocean view like the ones located on piers in coastal cities. But it does have a fun train track winding all around the ceiling and a miniture train that keeps kids and adults (like me) entertained ; ) Leave a Comment Theme: DinerDirections: In Franciscan Plaza on Camino Capistrano in San Jaun Capistrano a couple blocks from the MIssion.

On a lovely spring day in San Juan Capistrano we sat outside on the patio of this converted train depot. Some of the trees on the property are over 100 years old. Sarducci's has left some of the "flavor" of the train depot incorporating it into their decor. On the walls throughout the restaurant are works of arts made by local artisans. Sarducci's is right next to the train tracks and is convenient for a quick bite prior to catching a train.
I had the chicken fingers which were generous portions of chicken breasts with horseradish and marinara for dipping. The peach ice tea has a very nice flavor. The Greek Gyros was also tasty but unfortunately I could not eat the pasta salad as it was ladened with mushrooms and I am allergic to mushrooms. Too bad because it looked good. Diedrich Coffee House is located in a historical brick building right across the street from the Mission. This family run business had humble beginnings in Orange County selling quality coffee beans out of the owners garage in the 70's. The seasonal Jamaica Blue Mountian and Kenya Coffees are great so I buy the beans by the pound whenever they are available! I also like their ice tea & mocha-java shakes. They also have a lbreakfast & lunch menu and a case filled with assorted baked goods. Update: Sadly the Diedrich across from the Mission has been bought out and has become yet another Starbucks. On a positive note the nearby Mission Viejo location of Diedrich is still open. Hidden in a small shopping center between Camino Cpaistrano and Del Obispo is a Quaint German Restaurant called Cafe Mozart. I have only lunched in the Spanish styled Courtyard near the fountain. But I have had friends highly recommend diining in the homey dining room. I have mainly enjoyed the baked specialties, like Bavariam Bread Dumplings. I also like the salads and Onion Soup. But for the more adventurist they have Escargot, Sauerbraten, Schnitzels,Duck Pate and numerous gourmet dishes using chicken, beef, pork, lamb and somtimes even wild game. For a special evening out or just a nice lunch on the quiet patio ,Cafe Mozart has something for every taste. The Cedar Creek Inn is a family owned restaurant across the street from the Mission San Jaun Capistrano. It has a beautiful dining room with a large fire place. There is also a nice bar off the main entrance tastefully decorated with an African Motif. Or you could dine outside in a beautiful brick lined courtyard with climbing vines on the walls and overhead arbor .But my favorite time is at night under the stars by the outdoor fireplace with the music of a guitar being played live in the background. .
Both the food and the atmosphere at Cedar Creek Inn are great. My favorite menu items are the Grilled vegatable platter,Marcy Salad, Garlic Cheese Bread, Monti Cristo sandwich & Meatloaf. My favorite drink is the bottled Ginger Peach Iced Tea. And in the summer when peaches are ripe, for dessert a delicious Peach Lush is a must ! We were deciding on what type of food to have for our Saturday night dinner. There were several excellent choices out there but we finally decided that Margaritas were definitely a good idea, so we made reservations at the El Adobe de Capistrano. The actual restaurant is housed in a historic landmark, built in 1778 as one of the Yorba Adobes. The restaurant serves authentic Mexican cuisine and this restaurant was President Nixon's favorite dining spots whenever he visited the "Western Whitehouse" in nearby San Clemente. We knew we had reservations for 7pm but we arrived a bit early and the place was packed with people. We went to the bar, ordered our margaritas, ate a few chips and salsa and then our name was called for a table in the dining room. Update: May 2007: On a day trip to SJC we stopped for lunch here. We had margaritas and a lot of chips and great salsa. The service was prompt and efficient and the food quite tasty. Very reasonable prices for lunchtime.
Kris ordered a burrito filled with chicken, mushroom, spinach topped with a verde salsa. I had a cheese enchilada and taco accompanied with rice and beans. The servings were generous and filling. I had a wonderful flan for dessert, thick rich and creamy and Kris had Grand Marnier. The service was very good and we enjoyed our table which looked over a large party going on. El Adobe de Capistrano is open daily for lunch an dinner. It is advisable on week ends to make reservations. The Sun Dried Tomato Cafe is a great new restaurant to come to San Jaun Capistrano. I have eaten here for lunch and Sunday Brunch. I think it will become another one of my local favorites. The house specialty, Cream of Sun Dried Tomato Soup is great for a starter or as a main (with a basket of bread). I like the salads, my son likes the fish and they also have some pasta dishes. So far everything we've had, has been delicious. I am looking forward to trying new things.
