red x = parking garage by DoroTheExplorer During the day, parking your car on the streets downtown will require you to feed the meters. If you’re going to be there for a long time, you might as well park at one of the two parking garages. Both parking garages give you one free hour and then charge a small hourly fee for any additional hours—something like 75 cents to maybe a dollar. Parking Garage 1: On Palm Street, between Chorro and Morro. Parking Garage 2: On Marsh Street, between Chorro and Morro.* * Marsh is a one-way street, heading east, so drive from the Chorro side to get into the garage. Another option is to park further away from downtown, in residential areas. It would only add 5 minutes to your walk if you were lucky enough to even find an open spot. At night, after 6pm, street meters are free. Parking garages are still open, too, but they still cost money. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

drive around the orangey line by DoroTheExplorer Avoid driving through downtown SLO on Thursday nights between 5 and 10pm. Higuera Street, which runs right through the downtown area, is closed down to vehicular traffic for Farmer’s Market. Check out my homemade map. Don't drive anywhere within the orangey-tan border. Driving ON the orangey-tan line is okay. And I forgot to draw it in, but Marsh is a one-way east-bound street. There will be signs anyway telling you you can't drive that way for the night, but sometimes even locals forget and have to detour around instead of driving straight through. Theater at Hearst Castle by meteorologist1 The famous Hearst Castle is about 30 miles north on California Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo. This castle was built by publisher, art collector, and movie producer William Randolph Hearst. Located in San Simeon, which is adjacent to the Pacific coastline, Hearst Castle is now a California state historic monument, specifically known as "Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument". This is definitely a must-see if you're coming to this area (San Luis Obispo County). Leave a Comment Directions: From San Luis Obispo, follow California Highway 1 North. Pass through Morro Bay and Cambria. In San Simeon, there should be a sign saying to turn right into the Hearst Castle Visitor Center.Website: http://www.hearstcastle.org/

Mission de Tolosa by keida84 Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded by Father Juniperro Serra on September 1, 1772. The mission was the 5th out the 21 to be founded. As Governor Portola and his men continued to search for Monterey Bay, they were taken aback at the great number of bears which inhabited the valley, which was promptly named the Valley of the Bears. The Spaniards killed several bears for food. The meat was generously shared with hungry Indians and that kindness paid dividends quickly after Father Serra founded the fifth mission in the Valley of the Bears. The first buildings were of adobe with thatched roofs, typical of the early missions. In recent years, careful restoration has given the church much of its original appearance and was returned to the catholic church in 1859 and still serves as a working catholic church; and with the number of today's parish members, the Mission needs to add more space. need to add on more space. The original padres' quarters are now a museum and a square block in the heart of the "City with a Mission" is all that is left to be seen of former greatness. Created in 1968 this two block area in downtown San Luis Obispo provides open space, walking trails, seating areas, fountains, historical buildings, and museums. Besides the Mission, other attractions include the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Children’s Museum, and an old adobe. We stopped here twice, once at night and once during the day. Our night visit was quiet and peaceful except for a few local hoodlums hanging out down along the creek. Our daytime visit showed us a better view of the historic architecture, and the area was much busier, mostly with people visiting the mission. Also in the daytime there were some kids playing in the creek and a guy with a guitar just strumming away. Leave a Comment

DON'T MISS THIS FARMERS MARKET by travelgourmet Thursday evening Farmers Market is looked forward to by locals and tourists alike. This is a big deal in San Luis Obispo. The main street in town, Higuera Street, is closed down to vehicular traffic to become a pedestrian zone and for six blocks, running from Osos Street to Nipomo Streets, it is a fun filled, action packed produce, flower, food, information, and entertainment center for young and old, alike. Taking place every Thursday from 6pm-9pm, except on Thanksgiving, which is the third Thursday of November or when it is raining. You must visit this FARMERS MARKET when in San Luis Obispo on a Thursday. Don't eat dinner at a restaurant but show up at the food stalls and BBQ stands on Higuera Street and purchase the wares, from corn on the cob to wonderful pies with all the BBQ chicken, ribs, sausage, kabobs thrown in between. Many types of ethic foods are also available. Check out my two travelogues on the Farmers Market Produce Photos and the Farmers Market Food and Entertainmet Photos. Many of the boutique stores are open as well as restaurants and bars down and around Higuera Street. NO PETS ALLOWED. Hearst Castle was constructed from 1919 to 1947 by newspaper baron and former congressman William Randolph Hearst. The main structure, called Casa Grande, has over 60,000 square feet and features a huge medieval dining room, a pool designed after Roman baths, and a main sitting room full of European artwork. Guests were welcome at all times, and they could stay at one of the three guest houses, or they could take advantage of the Casa Grande's 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, and 19 sitting rooms, but there was no room service... all guests were expected to take dinner with Mr Hearst and the other guests in the main dining room. While staying at the house, visitors were welcome to use the Neptune Pool, a huge swimming pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean and framed with actual Greek ruins that Hearst imported from Europe, or they could enjoy the huge collection of animals at the world's largest private zoo. The buildings at Hearst Castle were designed by architect Julia Morgan. Five tours of Hearst Castle are available: the experience tour for an overview, tour two for the upper floors, tour three for the north wing and Casa Del Monte, tour four for the gardens, and the evening tour. Guided tours are $20 to $30 per adult depending on the tour you choose and the season. Though some people recommend skipping the experience tour and moving on to tours two or three for a more in-depth look at the castle, we decided to try this basic tour to get a good background and overview of the facilities. We started at the Neptune Pool, went through Casa Del Mar, then entered Casa Grande to visit the main sitting room, the dining room, some guest rooms, the theater, and the Roman Pool. After the one hour and 45 minute tour, you may watch the National Geographic film on the building of the castle back at the visitors center. I thought this was a great tour for our first visit, especially as we weren't overly familiar with the background of the castle. by Kaylin This is one of the stop we made along the way up to Monterey this past Labor Day Weekend. We thought since it would be interesting to see an apple orchard. Although we did not get to see one, we were able to taste one of the best apple cider ever at this little shop there. They offered apple cider, fresh popcorn, ice cream samples for all their guests. I was surprised that it was free when they offered it to us. They were both good. They offer a gallon of apple cider for sale to take home with you. They also made ice cream the old fashion way with a bucket and ice. They use the watermill as their electric source. The electricity is dependent upon how much water gets cycled through the mill. The host was kind enough to explain to us the mechanism behind it. The hosts were genuinely nice. Leave a Comment Directions: Within a few miles (15 minutes) of San Luis Obispo.
