The Sea Chest Restaurant: Great Clam Chowder and wonderful views
Great food, great location, right on the lovely coastline of Cambria. Very cozy and intimate. While you wait you can play backgammon or chess in their foyer. They also have a nice bar. The Sea Chest is located about 20 minutes from Hearst Castle. It makes for a very nice place to have a late lunch or early dinner when you're finished sightseeing. You can also find some nice places to stay overnight in Cambria. Check out my general tips.
Favorite Dish: Clam Chowder
Grilled fish, and pretty much anything on the menu

We had lunch at this rustic...
We had lunch at this rustic restaurant called Carriage Inn Restaurant. The food here is yummy!
Anyway, there's quite a potpourri of restaurants/ cafes here which offers delicacies that would please any taste palate!
Ragged Point Inn and Restaurant
Located at the far southern reaches of Big Sur, some 20 miles north of San Simeon, is the Ragged Point Inn. This former roadside stand has grown over the past 50 years to become one of the nicer stops along the coastal route through Big Sur. Today this stop has a 30-room hotel with stunning ocean views, a sit down restaurant, an outdoor snack bar, and a hiking trail that drops 300 feet to a private beach. The property was previously part of William Randolph Hearst's massive San Simeon estate.
On our way to the Hearst Mansion, we stopped at Ragged Point for a quick lunch. We used their clean public restrooms and strolled out along the beautiful cliffs, before grabbing a sandwich at the snack bar and a beer at the convenience store. We each had a grilled ham and cheese, which were $6 and not a bad value considering all of the tasty ham piled on top of the perfectly grilled bread.
Ragged Point Inn: Great Pasta, A marvelous view and a salty breeze!
Ragged Point is actually a privately owned resort property. The Ramey family has owned the site for nearly forty years turning a gas station and snack shop into a beautiful and tasteful resort featuring a motor inn, an excellent restaurant (terrific soups), gardens, vista points, and of course the trail to the beach. There are few services between here and Big Sur so it has been a popular place to stop for generations of travelers.
The trail to the beach at the base of the cliffs is short (1/2 mile) but steep with about a 400 foot change in elevation. Views of the beach below are spectacular (left) as are the ever changing views of the cliffs to the north. This cliff face is well-watered and hence very lush in vegetation.
The beach is rather exotic with the black sand. It is a rather common phenomenon on this section of the coast. The view of the cliffs is all the more imposing looking from the bottom up. Few tourists are willing to brave the trail so it's also very private.
Ragged Point also features the largest waterfall on the Big Sur coast. While most folks focus on the amazing views of the cliffs to the north, there are also great views to the south. As the mountains move inland the cliffs diminish, and the level coastline offers low lying cliffs sheltering pretty pocket beaches.
Favorite Dish: Italian Pasta Dishes.
Day Break Breakfast: Breakfast Nook of Days Inn Hotel
they serve continental breakfast for the hotel guests here at Days Inn Hotel in San Simeon, a tip, you can eat for free here even if you are not a check in guest since they don't check out your room number, heck there is no one to check you out when you enter the breakfast nook so for all wiseguys there who want a free breakfast, you can go to the Breakfast Nook of the Days Inn San Simeon! They offer typical continental foods like waffles, pancakes and some bagels and other pastries and some hot coffee and orange juices from the dispensers. The breakfast nook is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 everyday and is located just beside the Front Desk.
Favorite Dish: the typical continental meal of eggs, pancakes and bisciuts.

Big Sur Cafe & Leo's BBQ: Big Sur Cafe

opens: 7:00 am to 10:00 pm everyday
Favorite Dish: the southern style pork spare ribs and the sirloin steak tips sandwich, which costs $ 14.99 and 15.99 respectively and they have a special 10% discount coupon given to diners as a promotion.

Manta Rey: WOW!!
The Manta Rey was a totally unexpected fantastic restaurant in a strip mall just off the highway. The food was fresh, resasonable, plentiful, and the service totally professional. We stayed at the Silver Surf Motel and asked the people at the front desk where to eat. They recommended the Manta Rey and gave us a 10% off coupon. In my travel experiences that usually means "you can get better food but you can't pay more for it". We checked the menu, saw the nice variety of seafood and decided to give it a try. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table but it was well worth it! As we were going in, a man who had just finished told us we needed to try the lobster encrusted sea bass - we'll have to go back because none of the four of us chose that entree. All I can say is that if you want San Francisco quality food at a local price (entrees 12-20, wine 20-50) you have to try this place. I will definately go out of my way to eat here again.
Favorite Dish: I had seafood pasta with fresh clams, shrimp, scallops, etc. My wife had a huge piece of calamari, our friends had the fried seafood sampler platter - I was the only one who could finish the entire meal.
