The guided tours around Hearst Castle start on the bottom of the hill near San Simeon. Here one can choose which tours one wants and then is loaded on a bus that takes you up - up - up to the Hearst mansion(s). Then the tour goes on by foot. One tour puts the emphasis on the surroundings of Hearst Castle and drives through the estate (with it's safari-park). After the walk along many amazing sights and chambres, the bus brings you back to the entrancegates..
There is a county bus service available from San Luis Obispo to San Simeon from Mondays through Saturdays. HOWEVER, NO direct service is available to Hearst Castle. :-((
You can choose to hop onto an Amtrak train OR a Greyhound bus OR rent a car from San Luis Obispo instead....

Park your car. Then buy a ticket and you catch the bus which takes you up to the castle.
