Parking is an issue for those who want to drive to the border but not drive across.

Parking Lots are a big business in San Ysidro. The closer you are to the border, the more you'll have to pay for parking. Pay attention to the rates offered. You'll see big signs, $4.00, $5.00, $6.00 and $8.00, a no-brainer, right? Not exactly. At the $4.00 place it can be per hour, at the $5.00-$6.00 lot it might be for 8 hours, at the $8.00 sign you'll notice that it is for 24 hours of parking, and anything in between!

This lot is the nearest to the gate entering Mexico, on the west side of the freeway making it the most convenient place to park going in, but you'll have to walk across the bridge--over the freeway--to get back to your car upon your return to the USA. I mention this in case you plan to come back after dark and after a few drinks, in that case it might be safer to park on the east side.

Car Insurance is not compulsory in Mexico, but the issue of insurance is important when driving in Mexico.

Most US car insurance policies will not cover your car beyond US the border--some do, so check out your policy.

Many car rental companies will not allow their cars to cross the border--some do, and the price of complete coverage is tacked on to the cost of the rental almost doubling it.

The issue of car insurance will only come up in Mexico if you have been in an accident.

Mexican Law requires that a driver involved in an automobile accident must be able to meet financial responsibility requirements in the event the driver is found responsible for the accident and occurring damages, bodily injury or death of another.

In the unfortunate event of an accident, only a Mexican insurance policy will be recognized as valid.

Baja-Mex Insurance sells Mexican Insurance by the day or by the year. The rates average $14.00 (liability only) to $18.00 (full coverage) per day.

They are located on the US side of the border, next to the Plaza Las Americas at:

    4575 Camino De La Plaza

To Park and walk across the border you'll have many parking lot choices. The things to consider are the rates and the location, how close to the border you want to be, what time and in what condition you plan to return.

San Ysidro, near the border, is divided by the converging I-5 and I-805 freeways. A block from the border entrance, west side of freeway and the border exit, east side of the freeway, is a bridge that spans the ten or so lanes of the freeway. You walk across this bridge get to or from your car, depending on the side you park.

Each freeway offers a "Last Chance Exit" to let you know that the next "exit" is the border. Take this "Last Chance Exit" and reconnoiter a bit to find the best parking place for your budget and for you needs.

This lot is nearest to the gate exiting Mexico, on the east side of the freeway. It is the most convenient place when leaving Mexico. It is especially the best place to park if you are alone, if it is dark when you return or if you are drunk, all conditions that put you at risk in any place in the world.

    "The San Diego Trolley"
A great way to get to the US/Mexican
    border. The trolley travels quickly,
    reliably, and safely to destinations
    around San Diego .....

Plaza de la Puerta de Las Americas is the newest thing in San Ysidro. A lovely shopping mall with about a hundred outlet stores. This is a shoppers haven as it is now, but there are more plans for this place. An extended section is being added and the Grand Opening of that will be 20 May 2005. Later, a bridge connecting the USA with Mexico will be built and it will serve as a new entry port!

    The last street before
    entering Mexico!
    by lmkluque
The main reason most people go to San Ysidro is to cross the border. This photo is actually of the entrance into the USA from Tijuana Mexico. You can see how close the San Diego Trolley--San Ysidro--Station is to the border. The draw back is that once you reach the station, you'll have to go over the bridge, a block away, to reach the Mexican entrance. Of course the walk isn't a long one for most people, but those of you who--like me--have trouble walking should be aware that once you get off the trolley you'll have ten lanes of freeway to walk over.

US citizens and non-US citizens should take a look at US Customs & Border Protection website for the newest changes effecting border crossings. Also within this site you will find things to know before you go and I advise reading it.

The website listed below will provide accurate Border Wait Times, just scroll down to San Ysidro for updated information. Very useful!
