A great little airport

This might be my favorite airport anywhere! If you are visiting Santa Barbara I would consider looking at the difference in cost between connecting directly to Santa Barbara versus flying into LA. Frequently I have found that the bus ticket from LAX to Santa Barbara is about the additional cost as connecting by plane (assuming the ticket is not last minute). If you are renting a car consider the price difference between LA and Santa Barbara, given the cost of fuel the higher price for cars in SB might be worth the difference in mileage.
The airport serves a surprisingly large number of destinations given its small size (Denver, Seattle, Dallas, Portland and Phoenix as well as the more traditional connecter flights to Los Angles, San Francisco and San Jose). Check in is normally a breeze and the weather is usually pleasant enough that you can wait outside for your flight (the gates have boarding areas with security check points but there are plenty of places to wait outside before going through security.
The airport is actually in Goleta (about 10 miles for downtown Santa Barbara, but there is both a bus stop with direct (although frequent stops) service to the down town transportation center) and plenty of taxis.

A good way to go around is by public bus, in Santa Barbara there are nice comfortable busses and they have a schedule so is easy to get them.
Busses stop are wherever you see the yellow and black MTD sign, usually every few blocks on the route. Be sure to have the exact fare ready when you board and if you need to take another bus to complete your one-way trip ask the driver for a transfer when you pay.
To know about the schedule you must go to the central busses in downtown where you can get a book with all the information about routes and lines or you can also go to the website.

There is a great shuttle that runs up and down State street and along Cabrillo Boulevard by the beach. It's only 25 cents, and runs about every ten minutes. Yo can catch it at every block on State street and by the Dolphin Statue on Cabrillo and State.

  • There are also many Taxi's to choose. They are very useful when you wanna go out dinner or if you are going out at night, because you can call them by phone then they will pick you up at destination.
    I recommend you use:
    "Orange Cab": 805-964-2800
    "Yellow Cab": 805-965-5111
Taxi's can be expensive so ask first.
By the way, the most of the drivers speak spanish too.

This was fun and I always take advantage of these kind of services when they have them. What better way to see and learn about the local area. These wonderful tour guides know all the little things that most literature cannot provide you. Its well worth the time and money. Just be sure to dress according to the weather please! They operate daily every hour and your ticket is good for free reboarding all day as you make one loop around. Yet, be sure you don't miss the last trolley back to your vehicle or you will be hoofing it. They have several different tours so be sure to check out their web site.

I saw these little cars scooting around and laughed my butt off. I thought they would be a blast to take advantage off. They even have GPS guided tours, what that is it has a GPS PDA satellite receiver the shows you where to go and they even have hand held ones you can take in your car or to just walk around with. They have all kinds of other fun vehicles to rent also Other modes of transportation:-)

I always find it neat that most of the coastal cities have maintained their rail history. Santa Barbara embraced this station and it still serves the public with an important mode of transportation still. It was refurbished back in 2000 and now it has many of the modern conviences to keep their passengers happy. The train still stops at many location up and down the coast, so please check out the amtrak web site for times and cost.

We left LA around 6:30 PM as the sun was getting low in the sky for the ride up to Santa Barbara. We could have taken a quicker route but why do that when you can go up the coast and right by Malibu? So, it took about two hours right up 100 miles of the Pacific Highway. There was no time for stopping and taking photos, that was time well-spent with G in LA but it being spring, it remained light for the whole trip.

When we left, it was 200 miles to Big Sur but that was a drive to take at a leisurely pace, stopping often. It is a winding, mountainous coastal road so even if driving with not stops it would take you over four hours.

There were few worries, we knew we would be driving up not only most of the California coast in the ensuing weeks but the entire coast of the United States.

  • Except while in SF, most of the people that travel California will rent or have a car. From wherever you are coming from, this is probably the best option to get to SB. SB is located roughly about 4 ˝ hours south of San Jose (I’ve made it in just over 3 ˝ hours before, but that is not something I would recommend). Or 1 ˝ hours north of the San Fernando Valley, or 2 hours north of LA. Of course, these times are all based on “little traffic”

SB does have it’s own airport, but the prices to fly in and out of here are usually outrageous. For example, to fly from the Bay Area (SF) to LA can be below $100.00, but to fly into SB, you might pay about $350.00. (Hence, renting a car is much better)

Then there is the train, although the cheapest method, and the train station is conveniently located near the heart of Downtown, you will be sacrificing a lot (time & convenience). Where the drive from SJ can be about 4 hours, by train I think you might be looking at about 9 hours. And while in SB, I think it is a good place to have a car so you can explore the mountains and valleys and beaches and I.V. and whatever else you want to. On the other hand, if you are only passing thru for a day or two… then you might not have time to do all those things anyway.
