Portrait of Mexico Today by Siqueiros, 1932

Santa Barbara has an excellent museum of art. Its collection on Asian art is particularly impressive; the whole second level of the museum is devoted to works of art from India, Tibet, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

The musem also has in its collection the works of famous American artists like Sargent, Hopper, and O'Keeffe, as well as renowned European artists like Monet, Degas, Matisse, and Chagall. Recently, the museum acquired the mural "Portrait of Mexico Today" painted by David Alfaro Siqueiros in 1932 (see picture). It is on display in a shed beside the museum building where it may be viewed free of charge.

The museum regularly holds different special exhibitions to maintain the interest of the general public. The last time I was there, they had an exhibit on Japanese art, including ukiyo-e prints and weaponry. For their current exhibitions, go to the URL link below.

  • Free on Sundays

Everything is better when it's free, museums included. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is a great place to stroll around on a Sunday afternoon. Usually filled with great exhibits, It never fails to disappoint. After your done take a stroll down State street as well and snag some lunch or do some shopping. Just a tip, a great place to stay in town is The Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). I always stay there whenever I come and visit, i LOVE how price friendly it is. Leave my money in my pockets to spend on things I can actually take home with me! It's a great hotel in a great location, can't beat that!

I really enjoy visiting the Santa Barbara Museum of Art whenever I am in town. Beautiful in general, I have never not once not enjoy an exhibit. The last one I was able to visit was their tribute to America exhibit. Absolutely amazing and very good as well! When I was in town I was able to stay at the South Coast Inn (www.santa-barbara-hotel.com). So elegant and the perfect place to escape all of the city noise.

    Santa Barbara Museum of Art

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art offers some nice ancient and contemporary art work. The exhibits host American, European, and even Asian art. When I visited it, it had a special exhibit with Chinese ancestor portraits. Tickets to the museum are $7 per person, $5 for seniors, and $4 for students and kids. Admission is free each Thursday and the first Sunday of each month.
