Get a Harbor View
Favorite thing: Avalon is a small city surrounded by hills. Once you leave the city, no matter in which direction, you start to climb. And you should, because the view is just spectacular. This can be done by foot, by bicycle, by golf cart, or by one of the Avalon Scenic Bus Tours. The photo shows Avalon Harbor at sunset, as viewed from the Inn of Mt. Ada. The rotunda at the far side is the Casino, and the long pier in the center of the Harbor is Green Pleasure Pier.
Favorite thing: This waterfront street is the busiest and most touristy in Avalon. In the summer, loads of tourists from ferries and cruise ships stroll down Crescent Street shopping and dining. At night, the bars and pubs open late and the crowd gets a little grouchy.
Fondest memory: The photo shows a typical building on Crescent Street. It's designed to make every use of the waterfront real estate --
1st floor: souvenir shops
2nd floor: restaurants with harbor view
3rd floor: hotels with balcony
- Family Travel
Favorite thing: A popular beach close to the main harbor and casino. Good for kayaking, snorkeling, suba diving, boating and swimming. Rentals available. Beach bar and restaurant, live music. Public restrooms, changing rooms and showers available. Also picnic and large grassy areas.
- Diving and Snorkeling
You might see the real thing......
Favorite thing: It's possible to see buffalo herds if you take the Inland Motor Tour (32 miles) or Skyline Drive (10 miles) into the island's interior. We did see a few herds and a couple near the road.
Walkway leading to the Casino
Favorite thing: A scenic walkway extends from one side of the harbor to the other. Great views of the City of Avalon, shops, restaurants, the small casino and boaters.
- Casino and Gambling
Hike around the island
Favorite thing: The backlands of Catalina are great to hike around. The scenery is great, and you really can't get that lost.
- Hiking and Walking
- Diving and Snorkeling
Glass Bottom Boat
Favorite thing: The underwater life around the island is incredible, which is why the glass bottom boat is fairly popular. They take you by some historical and envinronmental sights at the bottom of the ocean.
Favorite thing: Along walkway walls leading to the casino are beautiful tiles depicting scenery and wildlife of and around Catalina Island.
- Spa and Resort
A busy Harbor on a sunny day
Favorite thing: A popular destination for boaters from the mainland. There are moorings out in the harbor and a boaters taxi service shuttling visitors to the shore.
