The truth is, this museum is s-m-a-l-l but it is still a great place to stop and take the kids. At least you won't lose them in this place. Its a fun little learning center (and free) with plenty of "touchable" stuff like petrified lizards and rattlesnake skin.

Santa Maria Nightlife

We've been to two PCPA productions at Allan Hancock College, and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. I think the previous poster understates the quality of the productions; in my experience they are very good indeed. PCPA is an intensive two-year program at the college where students work alongside established professionals (some quite prominent) in all aspects of theater. It's true, however, that this is the main nightlife activity available in Santa Maria...

Dress Code: "Slightly dressy" casual seems to be the norm.

Not big in Santa Maria. PCPA (students and professionals) theatre located at the Allan Hancock College campus almost always has a production running.

Mostly we roll up the sidewalks about two hours after dark.

Santa Maria Transportation

It's a car trip for most. There is an airport here, but who can afford to fly into such a small town. Amtrak comes into Guadalupe, eight miles to the west, but no car rental there, nor reliable public transport. Greyhound and Amtrak connecting bus service do come to Santa Maria.
Sorry to say it's a car town. Public transportation here is circuitous and for those without any other way to get around. Walking is not usually appealing becasue everything is spread out along a long North/South street for the most part. Bicycling is possible and very delightful in the surrounding countryside, long distance riders only.

Nice place to relax under the shade or next to one of the two lakes and soak up some of the cool coastal weather. About 153 acres boasts nice size playgrounds for the kids, basketball & volleyball courts and an area for Rover to burn some energy off. Most of the time you'll find a hot dog cart in the parking lot if you aching for a snack.

Orcutt Expressway between Waller Ln and Goodwin Road (just north of Skyway Dr)

Museum of Flight - on the airport property away from the terminal. Did you see 'The Rocketeer'? filmed here, full size mock up of the plane. Fun stuff.
Waller Park, a Santa Barbara County Park. Really big, lots of picnic sites, BBQs, pony rides(weekends), two kiddie playgrounds (both newly redone) a course for a frisbee golf like game (I forget what it's called), two ponds with birds and one with fishing too. Lots and lots of mature trees and lawns.
