One of the most outstanding attractions on Santa Monica's ocean front is the pier, which as well as providing touristic entertainment, also lights up beautifully at night. The pier has appeared in many a movie, including the Titanic, Forrest Gump, They Shoot Horses Don't They?, the Sting, and a recent favourite of mine, Thank You for Not Smoking.
It's actually a combination of two piers, one a sewer pipe carrier built in 1909, and later a wider pier built in 1913 that brought the ocean side entertainment. It was almost destroyed in the 1960s, only for its destruction order to be rescinded in 1973, just in time for its appearance in The Sting.
Impress your friends and be seen all over the world on Pier Cam (www.westland.net)
Just stand in front of the Santa Monica Pier, on the sidewalk to the northside and look across to the pick building where Il Fornaio restaurant is. Go there at a designated time and have your friends see you on the internet via the webcam. There is a live image that changes every 3-4 seconds.
Going on the pier is a an exhilirating feeling. You will find musicians and there are all kinds of little stalls where you can get all kinds of stuff like having your picture taken "with a celebrity" or getting an opportunity to book a place on different live TV show recordings.
Santa monica pier is an entrainment area, a place to relax and have a good time. It was built on 1909 but developped after that and now it's becoming as a must-see destination in Southern California. It's on the pacific ocean, just near the downtown, it's a nice place where from we can enjoy the view of the city, the ocean and the beach :)
Santa Monica pier is well know throughout the world.
When we were there in 2001 we took a walk along it and there were kids rides ... this our little 3 year old lad loved and made sure he spent as much of our money as he could.
The pier was opened in September 1909 and was 1600 ft. long when opened. Now it is 270 ft. wide and 1080 ft. long.
All in all a nice way to spend a few hours with the kids.
This landmark was originally built in 1906. Somewhat of a tourist trap with it's souvenier shops and mediocre chain restaurants such as Bubba Gump's, it's still fun to stroll and people watch and take in the street performers. The amusement park is geared more towards kids and offers a rather lame roller coaster; but make sure to fit in a ride on the ferris wheel at night with your honey.
The Santa Monica pier is a laid back thing to do on a nice evening. I enjoy it because you can eat, drink, ride, shop, check out the street vendors and performers or just walk up and down taking it all in. Inexpensive parking along the side of the pier down by the beach.
If you're in Santa Monica with the kids, be sure to check out the Amusement Park right on Santa Monica Pier (and if you forget, they're sure to remind you). It's actually quite small, but it's got enough rides to keep 'em occupied for a while. The ferris wheel is something of a landmark-when you see it, you know the Pier is near.
All part of a great family day in Santa Monica
This is a centerpiece of any visit to Santa Monica. Grab a bite to eat, check out the (as expected) many souvenir shops & buy yourself something kitchy. There's plenty for the kids to do, including the Aquarium, and you'll get some really nice beach views too.
It's not the biggest pier in the world, but it's someplace you'll definitely want to visit while in Santa Monica.
Remember when you were a child. You begged and bothered to go play at the arcade, ride the roller coaster and eat cotton candy! Wait - you still want to do this, right? Well, here many live out childhood memories at teh Santa Monica Pier, walking down the wooden planks and hollering with glee along with the little ones !
Pictured here is Playland Arcade where I love to play skeeball!

I was very impressed with this whole Pier and this Park is a Paradise for children and adults in my opinion there is something for every one visiting here.
It's fun lots to do. It's a landmark for Santa Monica. There are Amusements, restaurants and many shops along with street vendors. Everyone come here. I stayed right down the street so I saw it eveyday. Will see all kinds of people here which makes it alot of fun.
All the way to the end of Santa Monica Pier there's a 2-story building. It's housed by the office of Harbor Patrol, a Mexican restaurant, and also an observation deck. The 360 degree view up here is great. Looking west you can see the Pacific Ocean and many sailboats. Looking east you can see the city of Santa Monica and the many activities on the Pier. The panoramic photo of my intro page was also taken from here.
