There are all kinds of activities you can do on Santa Monica Pier. The Pacific Park, of course, is the popular attraction. Fishing is also allowed. Many people just get an ice cream and enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, and the music from street entertainers. I usually like to people-watch. Can't dive from the Pier though.
Walking closer to the ferris wheel and roller coaster on Santa Monica Pier, you'll see it's actually a full blown amusement park called the Pacific Park. Besides the many rides, it also has an indoor arcade and a mini golf course. Kids can easily spend an afternoon here. Somehow it reminded me of the Palace Pier in Brighton, UK -- a little old, a little cheezy, but loads of fun.
The most visible feature on Santa Monica Pier is the ferris wheel and roller coaster. You can see them from miles away. One of the local TV channels, I think Channel 7(?), has a web cam starring at the Pier and uses it as backdrop during weather forecast, so I get to see the Pier on TV even through I don't come here often.
The Pier is a nice pleace to enjoy a nice view of the beach, you can walk and buy some pretty souvenirs, go at the acuarium, the small amusement park next to the Pier and have a good lunch in the restaurant with a nice view to the beach.
check out all the wonderful artists on the santa monica pier..i have purchased art from the same man on several occasions and enjoy talking with him while he paints your piece..he uses his fingers to paint..
There's one place you definitely want to see ~ the famous Santa Monica Pier. It's open year round and the admission is free. They have playland arcade, carousel and many restaurants overlooking the ocean.

Leashed dogs are allowed on the Santa Monica Pier. However, they are not allowed inside the Pacific Park right beside the pier.
I saw a lot of pet lovers doing the boardwalk with their their dogs.
On the Pier you can rent all kinds of bicycles. It's fun to cycle along the beach, where they have special bike routes.
If you don't have kids, the pier isn't terribly exciting. But if you do have kids, they'll like the merry-go-rounds and whatnot.
