Ozzie Osborn is a retired Navy Seabee* who loves golf. He loves it so much that, about a dozen years ago, he bought some land along South Mountain Road and singlehandedly built his own nine hole, par 27 golf course. After all, The Seabees' motto is "Can do!" All holes are par 3. Ozzie has had 8 aces (holes in one), 7 on his own course! He had the construction skills to bulldoze the land, contour it, put in hazards and get it planted. Unusual features abound. Very high "kitsch" factor: one water hazard hole has a rowboat "sinking" in a shallow lake! *(The Seabees stand for Construction Battalion, CBs=Seabees).

Nine holes-par 27, 1,020 yards total, longest hole 175 yards. Each hole has two small greens, many guarded by bunkers, so for 18 holes you can play alternate greens. Clever!

He immediately opened it for public play, and it is one of the most unusual golf courses you will ever find. He built a clubhouse. too, and a practice putting green and good size parking lot. What are you waiting for? Play a round with Ozzie. You will have a ball at Ozzie Osborn's Par 3! Play it twice for an 18 hole score, par 54. Tee times: 9 am to 4:30 pm daily. $6 for 9 holes, $10 for 18 on weekdays, $10 and $15 weekends. Rent the entire course for $695/day!

Equipment: Just bring your clubs and balls. You might not need any woods, just a few irons and your putter. The ideal way to brush up on your short game, especially your putting, because putting is two-thirds of the game with all par 3 holes. One shot to the green and two putts to get down the hole. You've got a par! Tell him the Tugboatguy sent you!

    Double Deep Drop Scary Area
    4 more images

The city of Santa Paula has erected a large enclosed smooth concrete skateboard park with multiple slope gradients and levels of difficulty within the downtown Veteran's Memorial Park. There is a gated entrance with a two sided sign bearing bilingual (English and Spanish) rules for use of the facility. Prominent is the requirement for wearing a safety helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. Of seven young boys (all looked pre-teen), only one was helmeted while I watched and took pictures. A separate circular very steep double drop facility within the enclosure at the southeast corner was occupied by only one boy, without helmet. This area looked the most difficult of all. The city of Camarillo in Ventura County also has an enclosed smaller skateboard park next to the Public Library parking lot, but nothing as extreme as Santa Paula's.

Equipment: Hey, wear an approved helmet. One boy was continually trying a 180 degree jump turn and fell every time. No elbow or knee pads were seen. Two boys were practicing on the easiest part of the facility with almost level areas.

    Mountain View Golf Course

    Large Clubhouse

Mountain View Golf Course is a picturesque conventional 18 hole semi-private golf course built into the side of the South Mountain foothills. Front nine par 35, back nine par 34 for 69 total from the men's tees. Ladies tees front nine par 38, back nine par 36 for 74 total. 150 yard markers located in the middle of the fairways. The last time I played the course I made 8 bogeys (one over par), no pars. We shall enter into no discussion about my other hole scores, or the total score. lol!

There are some special hazard rules involving oil pipelines, unusual perhaps but fully explained on the scorecard. Other hazard rules apply to casual water, ground under repair and a hole or mound made by a burrowing animal. The scorecard is quite a revelation with 11 sets of special rules. Most I have ever seen and I have been playing golf since age 13.

Semi-private means one small annual fee to play. Then, fee for each game played.

Equipment: I recommend renting a cart and bring all your clubs because you will in all likelihood use every one. Essential to have conventional spiked golf shoes. The course can be in rough shape in early spring after winter rain runoff has torn up some of the holes-they might be partly unplayable due to erosion or standing water. In October, however, the course looked quite beautiful.
