Santa Rosa is home to Santa Rosa Junior College, one of the premier junior colleges not only in California, but the US. Founded in 1918, it is the 10th oldest JC in the state, and serves about 35,000-40,000 students per semester. It was created originally as a "feeder" college for the University of California and still functions in that role. Students come from across the state to attend it, but of course most are from the region. It has a beautiful campus with extensive lawns covered in ancient, native oaks and other trees. Nestled among the grounds are the various halls, the older ones being neo-gothic brick structures, and the college has largely maintained the tradition and character of the school by continuing to build new buildings in brick. It recently added a new, state-of-the-art, large 4-story Frank P. Doyle library which provides nice views.

In addition, a long-standing SRJC tradition is Day Under the Oaks, open to everyone. People come for events, people picnic, listen to music, visit the various departments, take part in art demonstrations, etc.
