Once or twice a year the herring shoals make their way to the shores of Sausalito. Fast on their flippers come the fishing fleet, sealions and seagulls. Somehow this always happens at night, and we wake to the midnight sounds of clanking nets, seagull caws and sealion barks. Walk outside and smell the salt air from the churned waters. I love this event...
Sausalito is right on the water and therefore can get the fog and mist which comes off the bay. Most of the fog has burnt off by early afternoon but like San Francisco itself, it can stay engulfed for most of the day. Average temperatures range from 40 to 74 degrees.
Sausalito has a "neighborhood" of houseboats. There are warrens of these floating abodes at the north end of the city. It's fun to take a walk out there and look at this lifestyle.
The Sausalito Art Festival is well known and draws 50,000 people over a three-day weekend each year. The festival is held over Labor Weekend (end August/early September.
