Fishing along a pier
Plenty of locals like to fish in San Francisco Bay. Personally, I wouldn't eat any fish caught in the bay. Especially larger ones. Because of the gold and silver mining over the past few hundred years, there is a somewhat high level of mercury in fish caught in the bay.
However, I know there are plenty of people that have no qualms about eating fish out of the bay. It's your choice! If you're pregnant or a child, however, I highly recommend that you don't eat fish you catch in the bay. Stick to the ocean fish you get at the market or restaurants.
Climb up the chicken ladder to the top of the hill
As you climb up the hill you'll see gorgeous homes, stunning views and charming little spots, hidden away from general view.
Nearly at the top of the hill, on Cloudview Road, is this little playground. This is half a block up the hill from where my mother grew up and where my grandmother lived. When I was born, family friends bought this little bit of land and gave it to the city of Sausalito with the proviso that it be turned in to a playground. The idea being that they wanted me to have a place to play when I visited my granny. Sweet.
When you climb the chicken ladder to the top of the hill, you see some of the most beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay. This picture shows you a little of Richardson Bay (Sausalito), the San Francisco Bay, Angel Island is front and center, and the tip of land to the left is Tiburon. Fringing the photo are oak and bay trees, which cover the hill in Sausalito.
See some sick pups
The Marine Mammal Center is located near the Pacific Coast in Sausalito. The Marine Mammal Center is a non-profit organization that rehabilitates sick and injured marine mammals such as sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals and sea otters. Hundreds of volunteers take on the responsibility of feeding, caring for and providing medical care, with the ultimate goal being a return to the wild for each animal. Quite a place!

Amazing French dinner for only $14.75
Between 5 pm and 6 pm EVERY DAY Christophe French Restaurant offers an "Early Bird Special" for $14.75. I've listed it in "Off the beaten path" because it's not right downtown Sausalito. It's walking distance, but almost a mile. It's worth it. Directions: Walk north on Bridgeway past Wells Fargo, past Casa Madrona, past the gas station, past Paradise Bay, and where it looks like the town is ending and the road narrows, keep walking. Around the curve in the road, you'll come to a stoplight. You can see 7-11 and a bus stop on your left, and 1 block more and you can see the restaurant, also on the left - at the corner of Spring and Bridgeway. If you are driving, there is parking behind the restaurant. The price doesn't include wine, coffee or tip. I've chauffered my customers here on my way out of town and they always leave a note on my gallery door how much they enjoyed their experience. Definitely romantic, but any occasion is worth celebrating here. I've included photos from my 2005 staff birthday party so you can get a glimpse of the presentation and interior. Bon appetit!
Sartaj India Cafe a Must!
Sartaj India Cafe is a must for any visitor to Sausalito. See, Sausalito is distinctly divided into three parts: there is the part for tourists (downtown area boutiques, stretching to ferry terminal), the part for the more esoteric houseboaters, artists, musicians (which contains nearly all the houseboats and low-level houses), and the smallest part for the rich people in mansions who live on the hills above Sausalito.
Sartaj India Cafe is a place most tourists aren't able to experience. It is most frequented by the artists and musicians who either live on the houseboats or around Broadway St. It is a small Indian restaurant which serves delicous food. An Indian couple run it and they are very friendly and helpful.
The prices are, admittedly, a little steep for the lack of service (as in waiters/waitresses) but most food is around Marin County, and Sartaj is so popular and has such a loyal clientele, that people would still come no matter how much the prices were raised.
My favorite: the Samosas. I go to Sartaj two or three times a week and I usually buy two Samosas and a Chai tea. The total comes to $5.90 For a full meal, the veggie burrito or meat curries are the way to go. The Chai tea is also delicous and cold water is available upon request. The meals run around $6-10, usually with a somosa and always with rice.
The address is 43 Caledonia Street. It is near the movie theater and next to an Italian restaurant and a Thai cafe. It is slightly away from the tourist part of town, but worth the 5 minute drive, or 10 minute walk.
Sartaj India Cafe is a delicous, out of the way, and slightly esoteric place to eat. My reccomendation for it is without reserve.

Peaceful and serene Muir Woods is the old-growth redwood forest closest to San Francisco. It is a 550-acre (223-hectares) preserve, with some trees 1,000 years old and as high as 252 feet (77 metres). There are easy trails to wander amongst the giant redwoods.
Location: Off Hwy. 1, on Panoramic Way (Off Hwy. 1, near Mt. Tamalpais) Mill Valley.
Tiburon is a sleepy little town at the end of the Tiburon Peninsula. It went from a fishing village to a quaint little town with historic buildings, pretty streets, art galleries and cafe's which overlook the harbour toward San Francisco.
Angel Island is just a short ferry ride away. Corinthian Yacht Club was established in 1886 and is one of California's oldest landmarks.
PLeasantly in the shade of the city.
Sausolito is, because of it's pleasantposition in the sadow of the larger and worldfamous San Francisco, a off the beaten path-destination in itself. Walking thestreets here brings you to rest and sitting along the shore aenjoying the magnificent views over the bay can last forever.
