By Ferry - Golden Gate Ferry provides daily ferry service between Larkspur or Sausalito (Marin County) and San Francisco. The Golden Gate (Sausalito) Ferry Terminal is located in downtown Sausalito at Humboldt and Anchor. The Golden Gate (San Francisco) Ferry Terminal is located in San Francisco's Financial District on The Embarcadero at the foot of Market Street, behind the south wing of the San Francisco Ferry Building.
By Car - Sausalito is directly across the Golden Gate Bridge, north of San Francisco off of Highway 101. Take the first exit off of the Golden Gate Bridge. The road winds into the heart of Sausalito.

You can take a ferry to the city from here. It is an easy trip and much more enjoyable than sitting in traffic.

A popular way to travel between Sausalito and San Francisco is the ferry. There are two ferry companies: Golden Gate and Blue and Gold.
Golden Gate goes to the San Francisco Ferry Building, at the base of Market Street. This tends to be the ferry that locals take to commute to and from work, to baseball games, etc.
Blue & Gold ferry goes to Fisherman's Wharf, so is the one that has mostly visitors as passengers.
Either way, it's a great way to travel.

When you take the ferry across the San Francisco Bay, you do get spectacular views! Perhaps you might want a hat or a rubber band for your hair, however. ;-)

You'll pass right by Alcatraz and Angel Island when you take the ferry to San Francisco from Sausalito. If the Hawaiian Chieftain is out and passes near your ferry, they will likely shoot off their canon towards you. Don't worry -- it's just gunpowder and wadded up newspaper. :-)

A very common site in Sausalito are bicycle riders. Locals and tourists, alike, peddle their way through town. By far, the most common bicycles I see for tourists are from Blazing Saddles. You can rent bikes from them at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, and they will provide you with maps and routes to ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, through Sausalito and even to Tiburon, if you should have that much energy. You can then take the ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf from Sausalito or Tiburon.

I think my very favorite way to get to or from Sausalito is by ferry. For visitors to San Francisco, looking to escape the City for a day (or a few hours), or for cyclists who want to ride TO Sausalito but don't want to try to get back up that long hill to the Bridge, the ferry is a great solution.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views of the City and the Bay from the water. The SF/Sausalito route drops passengers at the newly refurbished Ferry building, at the end of Market Street and on the Embarcadero. There are many public transit options from that point (pick up a transfer ticket at the Ferry Building.
