Every year in the Summer Seal Beach hosts a Sandcastle contest. The contest has 6 categories and 30 cash prizes.
Held some time in late summer, August or September, but
check with the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce for details and exact dates.
For years, homeowners of beachfront property would cross their fingers during our brief and sometimes violent winter storms. The swells would often end up in people's living rooms and the damage to private property was costly.
The city finally came up with a solution a few years ago and now each fall a team of bulldozers creates artificial sand dunes to keep the tides at bay.
The dunes seem to bring out the kid in everyone. It is hard to resist not hurling yourself down one. I've even seen people take snow saucers and inner tubes out to the dunes and slide down just for kicks.
Slick the sea lion sits at the beginning of the Seal Beach Pier. Legend has it that if you rub his snout you will have good luck.
