There are not so good restaurants at various visitor and camping sites throughout the park. Your basic American food can be found at the cafes at inflated prices. Your best bet is to bring your own food and enjoy a picnic at one of many picnic spots in the park.

You come to National Parks to experience nature in all its glory so why spend a lot of time in a fancy restaurant or an over-priced cafeteria? Sure, these places have their uses but the more time you spend in them while at the parks, the more chances you miss to see what you came for in the first place. The park system provides not only great campgrounds but also very scenic picnic areas, generally with restrooms, running water, and picnic tables. They are conveniently located and especially provide families affordable places to eat.

While having lunch at the Crescent Meadow Picnic Area prior to doing the short hike there, we spotted a beautiful deer with a nice rack coming right towards us. He easily jumped over the log between us and him and strolled right by us and off into the forest. Were we eating a filet mignon? No, but we did see something we are not likely to see at home, or a fancy restaurant for that matter.

You can make your picnic as fancy as you like. We were carrying a big cooler so always had something good on hand. Cheeses tend to hold up best over the long haul but we enjoyed salami when we could get our hands on some and were always on the lookout for great crusty bread. In a pinch, we always had Wasa Bread with us, which along with being nutritious is quite tasty and goes well with cheese.

We generally stick to water but also carry powdered Gatorade for variety and to add much needed minerals if hiking in arid conditions. Of course, if nothing strenuous is on the agenda, we might dip into the evening beer supply too. ;)

  • I haven't eaten at the restaurant since the relocation of most of the facilities that used to be at Giant Forest Village. The new area is at Wuksachi, about 4 miles north of the General Sherman Tree. Breakfast starts at 7am, and dinner requires reservations. (559) 565-4070. Food will be expensive. Supplies purchased within the park are also expensive. Lodgepole Village has a small market, snack bar and deli.

Buy what you can before you get there.

Along Hwy 198, here are some suggestions:

Closest to the park is Three Rivers. There are a couple of small markets and a pharmacy there.

If you need more than a few things, you can probably find them in Visalia. Heading west on Hwy 198 on the way to Sequoia, there is a good sized supermarket, a Wal-Mart, and a pharmacy on the right side of the highway. Exit at Ben Maddox.

Hwy 198 between Exeter and Three Rivers goes through mostly agricultural areas as it heads up to the Ash Mountain Entrance. Try buying some local seasonal fruit at one of the stands along the way. I really miss it!

Gorgeous weather, it felt so much like a hot summer day. And what better way to enjoy the breakfast than outside on the terrace! This is a little restaurant just before you enter Sequoia NP on the left hand side. The food tasted great, but maybe that was due to the wonderful weather, hahaha. I always get influenced by that. When the weather is great, everything else seems to be great also :-)

Food sounded great. Not a lot fo options. Pricey.

We skipped the supper and went the next morning for the breakfast buffet. It was good and we were satisfied.
