Driving through a tree and the Autolog
Yes, there is a spot where you can drive through a fallen tree. It is located on the road to Crescent Meadow, near Giant Forest. The Autolog photo op is a thing of the past now. The log that you used to be able to drive your car on for pictures won't support cars anymore because of rot.
Personally, I think it's a big waste of time. =)
Unique Suggestions: If this is a "must have" picture, remember that you might to have to wait with other drivers for your chance to snap this shot. Be patient.
Don't try driving through the tree with an RV or a high SUV. Use the detour or you might become someone else's vacation photo op when your vehicle gets stuck. *grin*

General Sherman Tree...not the best looking...
The General Sherman Tree in the Giant Forest is not the best looking tree in the forest. Be prepared to hike a bit to get to it. Yes, it's the largest in mass, but I found many other trees that were much more interesting to look at. There are what I'd call the twins and triplets on the trail - several Sequoias that appear to grow out of one mass. The twins are right beside the Gernal Sherman, and the triplets are between the General Sherman and the handicapped parking area.
Unique Suggestions: If you have a driver in your party that's not into seeing the tree and taking the (moderate) hike, there is a dropoff site right beside the handicapped parking area. The hike is much shorter from here. This plan will also work if one person in your party is really into the hike (paved trails - yuck!), and willing to hike over the top of the mountain to meet you at the tree.
I found that the best spot for pictures of the tree was near the cross-section of a Sequoia - across a small meadow from the tree. Great show of the immense size of the tree.

General Sherman Tree
This is said to be the biggest tree on earth : The General Sherman Tree. And you can find it here in Sequoia National Park. At the bottom it has a diameter of 31 meters and the tree is 83 meters high.
I tried to make a picture of it, but it is just too BIG. Hahaha, so instead I made 3 pictures and glued together, so you can see the whole tree ;-) It even looks rather good in this small format. Hahaha, but you can clearly see the 3 parts when you enlarge the picture.
The General Sherman Tree is a bit of a tourist attraction though. The tree is protected by fences (otherwise the roots get damaged). Most people want their picture taken in front of the tree and that also have to wait in line, before you'll be able to pose in front of it ;-)
