The area around Shingle Springs was not spectecular, but I'm very glad I went there anyway. There were many other things to see, things of the beat'n path. When coming, by bus, from Sacramento, you will make a stop just before Shingle Springs in Sam's Town. With it's nice Restaurant and little shops one thinks oneself back a 100 years. I used to go there, just to hang around, watch the people. Shingle Springs itself isn't (or better said: wasn't) much of a town. It's nicer to drive on to Placerville (Old Hangtown) an important stop on the Pony Express. Also the American River, where in the 18 hundreds gold was discovered. One can get a feel of how this was by visiting the museum near Sutters Mill.
