    B.R. Cohn Winery

by LionPrincess Written Mar 15, 2003

This winery was reccomended by the nice people at the Swiss Hotel.
The owner of this winery is Bruce Cohn, who was the Doobie Brothers manager. The tasting room has a few of the gold records on the walls, along with many newspaper articles about the music manager turned vineyard operator. The winery is also home to lots of olive trees and produces its own lines of olive oil and vinegar. In keeping with the music ties, the winery puts on music festivals with guests like Taj Mahal and Bonnie Rait.

    Valley of the Moon

We showed up at this winery just before it was time to close the doors on a busy day, but the employees treated us like we were the first people through the door. The property has a long and interesting history which is described on their website with great detail. The most interesting feature had to be the 500 year old Bay Tree which was rumoured to have been where Jack London would hang out and drink his wine.
The finest wine at this location had to be their 2000 Pinot Noir. The wine I was most disappointed in had to be their Port, which I felt, lacked depth.

    Domaine Carneros

For a trip into another world, try a visit to this great winery. The huge chateau sits on a hill at the top of a long driveway. At the time of my visit the trees were just in bloom and the sun was shining, I couldn't help but think about how romatic this place could be in the right situation. The parking is at the base of the stairs and the walk up is broken by fountains and ornate landscaping. At the top there is a striking outdoor patio and view that doesn't disappoint. The inside is a little less ornate, but is still grand and striking just the same.

    Artesa Winery

Before I even knew I could visit this winery, I fell in love with their 2000 Cabernet. The opportunity to see the place in person made me love their wines even more. Located on the top of a hill, the building is camouflaged by grasses and walking up the hill inspires thoughts of Beetlejuice with the abstract sculptures, fountains and pools. The inside of the winery is another treat for the eye with beautiful wood floors, glass walls and amazing artwork.
All the wines were good but would suggest trying the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

  • Historic Buildings on the Square

    by suzy816 Written Nov 9, 2002

There are plenty of historic buildings in Sonoma and since this was the cradle of the Bear Flag Revolt, we've got plenty to share with visitors!
Check out General Vallejo's Barracks and the Mission on the Square.
Guided tours take place for a nominal fee and will provide you with more than enough California history.

As there was only one day...

As there was only one day planned to tour the valley, I had to restrict to a few places.

This was a must-go as one of the best known in the World: KORBEL, visit of the museum with possibility to sample-taste all their wines (at least 10!!) and finish your tour with a cool REAL wine-tasting moment on the shady terrace - do I have to mention I was amongst *angels*?

Sonoma has a fun miniature train park where people can ride the train through a miniature world, town, etc., as well as go on rides and go inside some old railroad cars.

The best thing about visiting the Rodney Strong Winery is that it is right next to J Winery and you don't have to drive. Very pretty modern building with the vats of wine inside.
