If you drive into through South Lake Tahoe into Nevada on Highway 50 east, past the casinos, and down Spooner summit to Carson City, turn right and drive about 10 miles south into Carson Valley. Wasabi is located at 1799 Ironwood Drive in Minden, tel: 775-783-3210. This is the best sushi in Northern Nevada! I know that may not be saying much, on the surface, but it really is a hip place and the food is very memorable. Monday nights, our buddy Mario is behind the sushi bar, and he will knock your socks off! Let him improvise with crazy ingredients like oysters and seared scallops. Your gullet will be happily stuffed and they do have a full bar!
On the way back to Reno from Tahoe (Hwy 50 to 395, I think), these signs started popping up on the side of the road, with messages ranging from the instructional "Slow down!" to the cryptic "RIP Here Lies So-and-so, Killed by Highway". I thought I had stumbled into some bad horror movie. You know... 3 young people on a desolate stretch of highway stumble across creepy little town with a ... dum dum dum .. .KILLER HIGHWAY!!! Eeeeeeaaaghhh!
Sledding! We found a snow park on the way back to Reno that was a great sledding place. Unfortunately, where we live, we get about one snow day a year and even then not, it's not enough to go sledding usually. So we bought a cheap sled from Bartell's and went up to this place between Reno and Tahoe. I was going with the kids for about an hour until I was exhausted. They kept going for two more hours! ha ha. They absolutely loved it. It was the highlight of the day for them.
Accross from Heavenly Resort, above the T-Shirt shops there is a palmist/psychic woman. Apparently she is somewhat well known in the area and has had a few newspaper articles written about her. She lives above the shops in a small apartment. She does Tarot Cards, Palmistry and a few other areas. It is pretty interesting to venture up there and get a reading.
This is the home of TV's Bonanza. It's almost like a mini-theme park. You can go inside the Ponderosa and see the setting that the TV program used for their shows.
There is a staged "shoot-out" in the make believe town and other little shops and places to visit. There is a real outdoor hamburger place to buy fresh grilled hamburgers and chips.
When you are standing next to the Ponderosa there is a spectacular view of the Lake Tahoe area.
If you have a few days in the Lake Tahoe area it's easy to drive to Truckee and visit Donner Memorial State Park. This beautiful State Park is in the Sierra Nevada and offers an abundance of outdoor activities for summer and winter fun.
While there you can visit the Emigrant Trail Museum and the Pioneer Monument. The monument shows exactly how high the snow got the winter the Donner Party had their tragic experience there in 1846-1847at Donner Lake.
Art lovers...tucked in the back of the same "strip mall" as the Blac Bear cafe is an art gallery by local Tahoe artist Jan Foss.
Jan's works range from "fun" and comical sketches which are great gifts to more commercial large paintings of tthe Tahoe scenic area.
