Hidden in the corner of a small "strip mall" across the street from the Hyatte Lake Tahoe, the Black Bear Coffe Co Bakery and Deli is a gem of a find.
The freiendly owner and staff make the visit even more pleasant. From the "traffic" it appears it is a local favorite as well with a constant stream of people.
Favorite Dish: Starting with freshly baked rolls with no preservatives, add eggs made to order with ham, bacon or other deli meat, the breakfast sandwich is a wonderful culinary delight.
In addition the breakfast burritto is for even larger appitites. One of them can feed two people unless you have a very large appetite.
This place does such a great business that they only need to stay open for breakfast and lunch. On the weekends it's best to show up well before you're hungry as there will always be a pretty long wait. It's well worth it as you'll realize as soon as you sit down. The staff is friendly and helpful and the portions are tasty, big and affordable. They serve everything from eggs and pancakes, to waffels, omlets and skillets. For lunch they offer a variety of hot and cold sandwiches as well as burgers, soup and salads. Wether you're a breakfast person or more into lunch (served only after 11 am) this is the place to eat in South Shore.
Favorite Dish: My girlfriend had an omelette dish with spinach and ground beef (among other ingredients). It was almost bigger than her head and tasted delicious. I opted for the hot turkey sandwich which comes piled with freshly carved turkey, cheese, tomatoes and peppers.
If you're visiting Lake Tahoe, California, and are feeling a little adventurous, or just plain tired of California cuisine and All-American fare, check out ORCHID'S AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE off Lake Tahoe Boulevard (a.k.a. Highway 50), cross street 3rd St. The food is some of the best Thai food I've ever tasted; if we had discovered it on our first day in Tahoe, we would have eaten there every day. The service is good, the atmosphere pleasant, and the prices reasonable. Of course, because the food is pretty authentic, believe it when they say the dishes are spicy - but don't be afraid to ask them to tone it down! I highly recommend it.
Favorite Dish: They had a grilled eggplant with bell peppers, onions and your choice of protein (chicken, pork, beef, or tofu for those vegetarians out there). Its relatively standard fare at any Thai restaurant, but Orchid's made it well. The dish was well-seasoned, with generous portions of tender eggplant and pork.
For a great breakfast, try the Red Hut or Ernie's - these are 2 local hangouts that serve great basic breakfasts. Or for a great breakfast with a bit more atmosphere, drive a little ways to Chris' Cafe in Meyers, or Zephyr Cove Lodge in Zephyr Cove. All four places have friendly, down-to-earth waitresses, and all have very reasonable prices. Looking for a good burger? Then Izzy's Burger Spa is the place to go for yummy burgers and fries.
Favorite Dish: Chris' Cafe - huevos rancheros
Izzy's - jalepeno cheese fries - yum!
Red Hut - pancakes
MacDonald's isn't really on my list of favourite restaurants, as, I suppose, there are just so many places to chose from. However, this MacDonalds is nicely situated, and has great views of the mountains behind.
We sat upstairs in the balcony that overlooks the main street.
The food was usual pub food, nothing really outstanding. There were also pool tables downstairs.
Favorite Dish: Beer
There was nothing fancy about this little hole in the wall resturant... but it had decent food for a cheap price.
Favorite Dish: Bean Burrito meal
Great little pub located at the base of Kirkwood mountain. It's just pub food and great beer but it sure hit's the spot after a long day on the mtn.
