If you have a car the best way to hike this trail is to park at the very bottom of D.L. Bliss State Park. Park as far down as you can. The idea here is to hike to Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay State Park or Eagle Point. I recommend only going as far as Vikingsholm, then hike the road to the top and catch the Nifty Fifty shuttle back to D.L. Bliss. However, this requires you to walk about 2 miles back to you car but it is now all down hill and there are many trails cutting the switchbacking road. We did it in under 30 minutes easy.
Without a car you can take the Nifty Fifty shuttle to D.L. Bliss and walk the road at the beginning then after hiking the trail take the shuttle from the Vikingsholm/Eagle Falls area back to town.
You may see reports that you can catch the shuttle at Eagle Point. You can not. And I verified this with our shuttle driver. By the way, none of the park rangers had a clue if the shuttle stopped at Eagle Point or not.
The hike itself is easy to find and stay on track. It's about 5-6 miles of some great lake shore hiking with wonderful views of the rocky edge and clear water.
There are several ski resorts around Lake Tahoe. Heavenly is the one closest to South Lake Tahoe and hosts a variety of runs for all type of snowboarders and skiers. It is pretty extensive and it will take you whole day if you want to do all the runs.
There are several snowboard parks at Heavenly. I have not been to Kirkwood, but looking at the runs I would probably like it better since it is more local and more for snowboarders. I thought there were quite a few beginners at Heavenly.
Nonetheless, the views on Lake Tahoe from Heavenly are amazing, and the top of Heavenly at Sky Express offers probably the best views.
A daily lift ticket is pretty expensive at 77 USD, Consider buying the season pass if you stay for more than a week.
As with my biking post in nearby Incline Village, Tahoe is a wonderful place to go biking. Simply pick up a trail map and go.
However, if you dont have the time or the desire to search your own trail, the link below gives some good trails for mountain bikers. I've done all but one of the listed circuits (and others that are not listed), and they are all worthwhile.
Hit the trails in the link below or ask one of the bike shops for the closest access to the Tahoe Rim Trail. (not all of the 130 mile trail is open to bikers).
Equipment: Bring your own or rent from any one of the dozens of sports rental places in SLT.
I have seen a few folks looking for good reasonably priced golf courses in the Sierras. There are a ton of amazing golf courses up in South Lake Tahoe, CA and in and around Carson City, NV. June-October is good golfing weather. Always can be windy, and super dry by August if we have no rain. Some good choices:
Eagle Valley West and Eagle Valley East (both pretty hard, one really hard, I don't know which one), Carson City NV
Lake Tahoe Country Club Golf Course, South Lake Tahoe fairly easy, beautiful flat course with incredible views.
Edgewood - cream of the crop, major bucks for a round but right on the shore of Lake Tahoe, steps from the water. Very challenging course too.
I will check with my golf friends for more description, bit please know that the Tahoe area has fantastic golf in an amazing setting!
Thereýs lotýs of different kinds of water sports. Water skiing, jetboats, canoeing, surfing and kayaking are some. Locations to rent equipment can be found in almost every corner around the lake and itýs wonderful to spend some time out on the lake. Plus it gives you some excercise of course.
Equipment: You may want to bring your swimmers. Everything else will be taken care of. If you are not familiar with the kind of sport you just chose you will get an instruction on how to react or how to steer...
