Just off Highway 50 there's a split in to the road to go up to the top of Echo Summit, to Echo Lake. It's a beautiful lake with a trail that goes entirely around it. At least... well I think it goes entirely around it. We never seem to get all the way around. Instead, when we get about 1/4 the way around the lake, we head UP, UP UP the granite boulders. My husband grew up in South Lake Tahoe and he loves to go up this direction, with the goal of making it to the top of Flagpole Peak. We have not yet done that complete trip together, but I'm sure we will next Spring.

In the meantime, we've made it to the top of the ridge, just at the base of Flagpole Peak. Some of the most incredible, gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe are visible from here.

Kirkwood was not located in the immediate vicinity of Lake Tahoe, but it's distance from the lake provided for unparalled skiing. Not only is Kirkwood huge, standing at close to 10,000 feet, but the amount of snow accumulation was fantastic. The conditions were powdery with just the right amount of slushiness (is that a word) to make the skiing less work and more enjoyable. We had a great time and the view of the surrounding area was unimaginable. Definitely one of the top ski resorts I have visited.

Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe is accessed from the town itself! The Gondola access point is right there on the main street - the property spans the mountains around the south side of the lake in California and Nevada. There's no smoking on the mountain - so nicotine addicts be aware! The fire risk is real, and sloppy smokers can endanger this entire region.

I didn't do the gondola ride, so I didn't walk about the mountain. But, had I KNOWN about all of this first, I would have made the TIME! The Gondola takes you up the mountain where you can munch, enjoy the views from the platform, rock climb and access hiking trails along the rim.

So this tip is simply to record the website info, and let others know to check this out - it looks like a lot of fun :)

While you drive along, and you've convinced your friend to drive and you're simply a passenger, make sure to take in the view. Some of the most beautiful scenery I know is along the way to South Lake Tahoe, as you near Echo Summit.

I do love being up at Lake Tahoe in the snow. Even when waiting in traffic to get down the mountain, you can relax in to the beauty of the scenery.

8314-foot Monitor Pass is not a place known to most visitors of the Sierra Nevada, but it offers a very enjoyable car trip through some stunning scenery. To my knowledge, there is no public transportation of any type that passes here; in fact cars are at a minimum. From US 395 near Walker/Topaz, Hwy 89 splits off and begins immediately to enter a wild and rugged mountain land. The scenery here is stark and dry; you are still in the Great Basin desert. The road passes an interestingly empty and green valley, then begins to ascend. There is a constant view of this small valley, and later, views of the snowy Sierra Crest emerge. The road eventually climbs through a sort of alpine landscape to Monitor Pass, where you enter Alpine County. Great views of the Sierra Crest continue a while before the road descends into forests, all the while passing little hamlets like Markleeville.

    Eagle Lake
    by chewy3326
Eagle Lake trail is the shortest and the most popular trail leading into the Desolation Wilderness. Over 50,000 hikers walk this 2-mile round trip trail a year, mainly because of it's great scenery. From the trailhead, first fill out a day use permit; then hike up towards Eagle Falls. In just 5 minutes the trail reaches Eagle Falls, a small waterfall on Eagle Creek. There is a bridge above the falls. Only a few minutes past the falls is the entrance to the Desolation Wilderness. From this sign, the trail continues slowly uphill, passing great views of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe before rounding a ridge. After that, the trail reaches Eagle Lake in just a few more minutes. Elevation gain is only 400 feet, so you should be able to do the hike half an hour each way. There are good views of sharp peaks along the way. At the lake, you can get perfect reflections of Maggies Peak.

  • Directions: Eagle Falls Trailhead, near Vikingsholm; don't park at the parking lot for Eagle Falls ($3) but instead park on one of the spots on the road near the parking lot. These are free, but fill up quickly; come early in the morning.

Luther Pass is a low pass on Hwy 89 that barely exceeds 7,000 feet. Luther Pass seperates the Lake Tahoe Basin from the basin of the Carson River. There is nothing spectacular to see here; in fact, no mountains are visible from the forested pass. This photo was taken in the Carson Pass area, south of Luther Pass. By now, the snowcapped Sierra has become much lower and much less wild than it is further south in Yosemite and Kings Canyon.
