This Gallery is next door to Sonic Arts and I'm guessing that is the catalyst for it's name. The Next Door Gallery, located in a small "strip-type" section of businesses on Beech Street west of 30th Street was a surprise to find and I thought I'd share it here for those who like a bit of art in the itinerary.

This shop offers handmade ceramic art, jewelry, glassware as well as Mexician folk art. Many artists, including locals are represented here and much of the art is affordable. Art shows are held about six times each year for local artists as well as a couple of other events they participat in, such as the South Park Spring Walkabout.

Do you know what Microtonal music is? Do the names, Charles Ives, Harry Partch or the more recent Joe Monzo perk your interest? Well a visit to the Sonic Art's Gallery is a must for you!

Microtonal music is, as Charles Ives puts it, "notes between the cracks." of course that is for our western ears. Indonesian gamelan music and Indian classical music are good examples how far back this music goes.

The co-owner of Sonic Arts Gallery is Jonathan Glasier and he worked with Harry Partch for many years. His Gallery is, headquarters of Sonic Arts Institute, a music studio, an antique store and a museum.

Not a square in the usual sense. It is, however an attempt at adding some charm to the area and one of the first signs of a community trying to upgrade it's image. It is much the same kind of thing that was done in Hillcrest earlier on and it seems to be the first step in creating a charming place to be.

This section of Grape Street, right off 30th Street offers no parking and the sidewalk in front of the establishments is much wider than normal which allows the Big Kitchen to add chairs and tables to be placed out front to accommodate dining al fresco. During the Winter and early Spring months these table and chairs are not available.

On the south side of Grape Street there are a few interesting businesses one might want to stop or shop at, The Big Kitchen, South Park Bar & Grill and The Zen Merchant to be specific and there is a community type bulletin board placed at the east end.

Across the street on the north side is the Bottle House Liquor Store and on the eastside of this square is a generic grocery store.

In 1974 Caryn Johnson worked at the Big Kitchen to support her daughter. During her time in San Diego, she also worked with an improv theatre group called Spontaneous Combustion and began a career in theater at the fledgling San Diego Repertory Theatre. Then she changed her name to "Whoopi Goldberg," and the rest you know.

Whoopi Goldberg, a life-sized poster of Jerry Garcia and a visit by Rachel Ray are the "claim to fame" of the Big Kitchen, Howerver, what makes it really a worthwhile place to go for breakfast or lunch is the cozy, friendly atmosphere. There is nothing fake at this place and they serve hearty delicious food.

When you walk in, the wooden counter and a couple of wooden booths make the room seem pretty small and always crowded, but in back there is a trellised patio and I suggest sitting back there, even if you have to wait a while.

Favorite Dish: What else? The "Whoopi Goldberg," Two eggs, four pieces of bacon and grilled potatoes, is what I suggest you order.

This used to be a Cuban restaurant. The food was pretty good, but it seems that it didn't take hold in the community and now it's the South Park Bar & Grill, a neighborhood family restaurant.

It is closed on Mondays and open only for dinner, except they offer Sunday brunch between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm. They offer live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays and have an outdoor court yard.

Favorite Dish: South Park Bar & Grill offers classic American dishes such as meatloaf, macaroni & cheese, but also there are hints of Italian and Japanese flavors to some items as well.
