If you have time, fly into San Francisco and after exploring that city, drive down California Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway. I found a good book on the subject at my local bookstore that recommended places to stay and things to do. One of the first places I stopped was at the Monterey which has a Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row (read the John Steinbeck short story before you go for an appreciation), and a great acquarium. This is one of the best and largest adquariaums in the world. When we visited it had a great exhibit on jellyfish, some of which seemed to glow like fireflies.
