"A natrual glacier formation, or the work of an unknown tribe as a form of altar, its exact origin will never be known. The perfectly balanced stone until recently would rock at the touch of a finger.
C.F. McGlashan built the original tower in 1895 and used it to display Donner Party relics and his famous butterfly collection. Site of an overnight stop of the Olympic Torch in 1960."
The Stone takes only a few minutes to see and is free. It might not be the most memorable thing in the world, but from up on the memorial, you have an excellent arial panorama of Old Truckee.
Day trip on the train over Donner Summit
If you want a truly unique and wonderful winter experience, take the train between Colfax and Truckee!! In my opinion it is best in the winter with a good snow, but still beautiful any other time of the year.
This give a one-of-a-kind view to the Donner Summit pass (where the infamous Donner Party got stranded in one of the worst winters on record). The train has wonderful panoramas that cannot be seen from driving over I-80 in a car.
View from Squaw High Camp Lodge
Even if it is not to go skiing, I recommend that you take opportunity to visit Squaw Valley. If you have a car, it would allow you to be flexible, otherwise, have your friend show you the nearest shuttle bus pick-up. Squaw Valley base is a small town by itself, with restaurants, shopping and nightlife (some good bands and concerts play there). Prices might be a little higher, but you pay for the beautiful back drop. If you go to Squaw, take a ride up the gondola/cable car to the High Camp Lodge. You do not need to be a skier to visit. The high elevation, view from the ride and lunch on the patio will be a good memory.
During the winter, you can go ice skating on the top of the mountain, or starting in the spring, the swimming pool is a wonderful place to relax.

Annual Snow Festival
Since the early 1980's, the communities along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe have come together to celebrate an annual winter festival.
The North Lake Tahoe Snow Festival happens annually for 10 days in the beginning of March. It is also a main source of fundraising for local orginazations and community groups.
There are over 50 evens scheduled. The festival opens with the torchlight parade, laser show and fireworks. The following days have "parades, pancake breakfasts, concerts, bar parties, ski races, dog pulls, an ice-cream eating contest, a luau, Mardi Gras party, ice carving, a polar bear swim and more."
I've skied in the torchlight parade myself a few times, and participated in many events. Its just a lot of good fun.
Donner State Park
This is where the ill-fated Donner Party became stranded, and had to spend the winter. Their plan was to head westward into California through this pass, which was supposed to be a short-cut. Everything went awry. They fell behind schedule and couldn't get make to across the Sierra Nevada mountains by the time the snow fell.
They were stuck there all winter, and ran out of food. Some turned to cannibalism, eating their dead comrades to survive. Only about half of them made it.
One member who did was a young girl named Mary Murphy. She settled in the Central Valley of California, married, and had a family. The town of Marysville was named for her.

Truckee has a church, River Rock Christian Fellowship, of which I am the pastor so therefore biased about this review. However, I can tell you that this is my fourth church that I have pastored and certainly the best. God found me 28 years ago in a Grateful Dead concert and revealed Himself to me in a vision. Yes, I know what you are thinking. You can read the story here: http://riverrockchristianfellowship.com/welcome/pastorstestimony.html
Anyway, as a church we travel a lot, particularly on healing trips to Asia and Africa. We also see a lot of healings right here in Truckee. If you need a healing come to a service and let us pray for you. Another unique feature of our church is that we have a prophetic team the will prophesy over you on Friday nights! This is a very powerful experience and one you won't soon forget.
Our Sunday services have a large worship band playing prophetic music with lots a people dancing around with flags. This is not your parents church service. I recommend that you check it out and expect a memorable experience. You can call me on my cell phone for additional info:
