Bistro Twenty Nine: Alaskan Fish Flown In Fresh Overnight

by JauntBoy Updated Apr 4, 2011

The most opulent place in Twentynine Palms, the Bistro opened in early 2009. It is also very gay-friendly! Owners Sam and Karen Provost have family connections with Alaskan fisheries, and have the freshest Alaskan seafood, from king salmon to scallops to halibut, flown overnight into Palm Springs, where it is then picked up and brought to the restaurant. The Bistro also features a 16-ounce New York strip, and an 18-ounce ribeye that's superb. The menu is constantly changing, so you won't be bored with the same stuff over and over again. There is a full bar with an extensive selection of imported and domestic beers, red and white wines, champagne, scotch, cordials, and two kinds of real and imported absinthe (Lucid is my favorite).

Favorite Dish: All their seafood choices are to die for, and, if you want something to comfort you, try the Comfort selection. A month ago it was housemade tomato soup and a grilled Muenster cheese sandwich. It is currently a grilled all-beef wiener with caraway sauerkraut and housemade Guinness mustard. Delicious!

The menu is fantastic! There are nightly fresh fish specials (the supplier is the Santa Monica Seafood Co.), and several chicken dishes that are outstanding. The New York strip is superb, and the chocolate mousse is to die for! The best restaurant in 29!

"Idiot's Gulch" is what we locals lovingly call the bar. It's a great place to hang out and meet people from all over the world. The bartenders are very friendly, and the selection is good. A nice way to relax after a day of hiking. Lots of out-of-town "family" make their way here.

Favorite Dish: Ask about the nightly specials; I usually get the seafood selection. Tasty!

  • The Rib Company: Break out the handi-wipes

Seeing as how my options were limited because I was looking for something close to my motel AND the fact that it's a small town, I just picked The Rib Company and gave it a shot. They serve pretty good ribs. Besides that you can get pretty much anything else you'd expect in a rib joint like steaks, sandwiches, etc.

Crossroads Cafe and Tavern: A Young, Hip, and Vibrant Crowd

by JauntBoy Updated Mar 7, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

New Year's Eve Party at the Crossroads

The Crossroads is extremely popular with rock climbers, environmentalists, musicians, the GLBT crowd, and anyone looking for fun, socializing, and fantastic food. It literally is a crossroads, as many people from all over the world manage to find their way here. The staff is a fun-loving, eclectic group of folks ready to serve you! They have a great selection of tap and bottled beers, both imported and domestic, and a decent selection of wine. You even get to bus your own tables. No hangups are allowed!

Favorite Dish: My favorite is the "Grilled Coyote." It's a HUGE sandwich made of a whole grilled chicken breast, thick-sliced and peppered bacon, avocado, sprouts, onion, lettuce, tomato, and a house sauce on a whole grain bun. You almost need more than two hands to tackle this monster!

    Santana's Mexican Grill: Authentic Mexican

by JauntBoy Written Jun 15, 2004

    Santana's Mexican Grill

This is definitely a "greasy spoon," but it's totally worth the trip. The food is great, there's lots of it, and it's CHEAP! Plus, Santana's is open 24 hours, in case you get the midnight munchies. Great place to go after the bars close.

Favorite Dish: The chicken-mushroom quesadilla with an horchata to drink can't be beat. It really hits the spot!

A healthful fare and fresh-baked goodies characterize the Wonder Garden Cafe. They serve both breakfast and lunch. The cafe also has the only coffee house in 29. Good stuff!

Favorite Dish: I like to indulge myself with the baked brie and fresh fruit. Delightful!

    Peking Inn: Desert Chinese Food

by spartan Updated Jan 7, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A locally run family establishment serving up excellent food at great prices. The owners take great pride in their business and ensure that the customers are satisfied with the service. The meal that I ordered came right off the wok and was served very hot.

Favorite Dish: Went there for lunch and ordered the Almond Chicken lunch special which came with rice, vegetable roll, chicken, almonds, celery, green onions and zucchini in a savory brown sauce.

    TK Chinese Express

This place has Chinese food with a 3 entrée dinner with Chow Mein noodles or fried rice for $7 or Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese food off the menu. It was pretty good, and fast. $9 as of October 2012.
