Ukiah Things to Do

  • Parducci Winery visit

We picked Parducci because we had some of their wine from our local wine store and wanted to try some of their better wines. They charge $5 for "4" tastes but do not really count unless you over do it...We bought a petite syrah called "True Grit" that was bottled and used at the final party for the remake of the movie by the same name----$19 for a...

  • Mendocino County Courthouse

The county courthouse is still located in the heart of downtown Ukiah, with an older part from about 1920 attached to a newer, much larger part from about 1950. Overall, it is a nice looking courthouse if nothing special.

  • Downtown Ukiah

Ukiah has a very attractive, lively downtown that tends to be rather sleepy in the evening and weekends (the town is only 15,000 people, after all), but quite alive, with a number of places to eat and shop in attractive buildings on nice streets, many lined with trees. This part of town has a great concentration of good eating places.

Ukiah Restaurants

  • Organic food and drink!

Organic pizza?????? Well, my sweetie likes organic stuff so we checked it out here in town---good choice, the beer is cold and good (try the Emancipator! 10% alcohol dark roast flavor) or the Willits Wheat beer, also a good one. We had 2 personal pizza pies, 1 lrg salad, and 2 beers for $47 B4 tip....not cheap but really good and all organic!

  • Great Bakery, Breakfast and Sandwich...

This is a great bakery and place to get sandwiches, breakfast and lunch, in the heart of downtown Ukiah next to the courthouse. As a side note, this is apparently owned by relatives of owners of other Schat's bakeries in Southern California and Bishop, CA, the latter of which I have been too, as well.

  • Organic Brewpub

This is a good brewpub right in downtown Ukiah, on State St across from the courthouse. It is in a characterful old building and serves organic beer and food, with some vegetarian selections.

  • Cafe, deli, bakery, coffee house,...

It's a's a's a's an ice cream shop. This cafe wears many hats. It is a great place for lunch with a lot of character and atmosphere. We each had a cup of soup/w bread and split a sandwich, which was quite large. Reasonable prices, great fresh food and drinks. Expert Witness vegetarian sandwich on 9 grain...

  • The Best Restaurant in Ukiah

Windmills Cafe is definitely my new favorite restaurant. The atmosphere is very welcoming and its a very family-friendly restaurant. They have crayons and games for the kids as well as a children's menu that's almost as good as the adult's menu. The service was wonderful, the waitress made sure that we always had everything we needed. There were so...

  • Don't Miss this Steak & Salad

The broiler is a great mix of people who are dressed up and dressed casual. Great steaks and wonderful grilled chicken dishes top the menu here. Sunday dinners come with soup, and dinners all week come with bread and salads. Also, the waitress doesn't usually mention it, but you have a choice of rice instead of a potato. I personally like the...

  • Big City Gourmet in a Small Town

Wonderful atmosphere! This restaurant was recently opened by two chefs from San Francisco and has fast become a local favorite. The menu isn't extensive, but the food is spectacular and reasonably priced. Coq A Vin - perfectly seasoned & melts in your mouth!

  • Authentic Mexican Food

El Azteca was opened over 30 years ago by Alex's mother. Now, Alex and her sister continue to run this exceptional restaurant. El Azteca is nothing fancy - it's a lot of very good food in clean, almost always busy, and usually noisy with chatter surroundings. Almost like eating over at a friend's house with all of their relatives. I forget what #...

  • The best bakery ever!

Schat's is a busy bakery/cafe. It is located within walking distance to the courthouse, downtown shops, and businesses. Which means: if you show up at noon on a weekday, the place will be packed and you will wait at least 20 minutes for your lunch. Better to get there at 11:30am or after 1pm and miss the rush.Schat's is well known for its excellent...

Ukiah Warnings and Dangers

  • Stay close to the beaten path!

Mendocino County is not a place to explore with wild abandon. I strongly advise sticking to paved roads with road signs and when out hiking, staying on clearly marked paths. There are two main reasons for this:#1 - Mendocino County is rural and it is easy for even locals to get lost. Your quest to see what's on the other side of the mountain or...

  • Please be careful & use common sense.

Don't get me wrong, Ukiah is a great place. But, it is not safe to go wandering around late at night in neighborhoods you know nothing about. There is an active gang population in Ukiah that is often feuding, a proportionally large homeless community (many of whom have mental health needs and are refusing services), and the town is right on Highway...

Ukiah Off The Beaten Path

  • Moore's Flour Mill

Moore's Flour Mill is a great place to get breads, flour, and bakery items. All items are made there and the flour is ground using large stone disks that are turned by a water wheel outside the mill. It's worth a stop to see the mill in action and get some tasty treats for the road.Location: South State Street across from the airport.P.S. A friend...

  • Need a good book?

The Mendocino Book Company has a good selection of books, friendly & knowledgeable staff, and it is perfectly fine to browse to your hearts content.Located at 102 South School Street, Ukiah (near Schat's Bakery and the Courthouse).

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.
