Earth Movers?

On our first visit to The Early Man Site, we were given hard hats to put on before decending into one of the largest pits which had been dug quite far below ground level. I had no idea that the San Andres Fault line ran through the area, and was fascinated to learn that the two big red arrows on the wall were pointing directly at the fault line. Originally the red arrows were lined up evenly. In the photo you can see how much one side of the fault has shifted from the other.

Of course looking at a fault line from below the earth is not a local custom--well, maybe at the Early Man Site it is--but earthquakes, which come from the shifting of these fault lines are a regular occurence. Most earthquakes aren't even felt, but when there is a big one, the deep rumbling sound coming from the earth and movement of the walls can actually cause motion sickness. The main thing to remember is, stay inside, best place is under the arch of a doorway and an earthquake generally last less than a minute.

I just wonder how it would feel standing here during a big earthquake?

...and this is how they chipped away at the stone.

This is a photo of one of the docents at the Early Man Site showing us how Native Americans made tools and weapons. It was not part of the tour.

My Slovakian cousin had come for a visit and on the way to Las Vegas we stopped at the Early Man Site. My cousin had many unanswered questions by the end of the tour and I suggested we ask the docent these questions.

Docents are people who volunteer to be trained, for at least six months, to give quality tours and are experts on their subject. It is a fact that most docent's love their work, readily share their knowledge and are more than happy to come upon a curious mind. At the Early Man Site, the "docent" will most likely be a trained archaeologist . They now have a group to join, Friends-of-Calico-Early-Man-Site for those interested.

By asking our questions, we were lucky enough to have a few personal demonstrations as well as gaining much more info than was covered on the tour.

Visit Calico Ghost-town in Yermo, founded in 1881 as a silver mining town. About one third of the town is still authentic the rest is carefully restored.

You even can have a wedding party in this town.

More info is available at their website Calico Ghost Town
