  • I definitely recommend buying food, drink, utensils, etc..before you come into the park. It's incredibly overpriced to buy anything at the markets in the Park. If you're entering the park from the south, you'll pass the town of Oakhurst which has 2 major grocery stores and lots of other little shops. I also recommend getting your alcohol here--even at the pharmacy it's much cheaper than buying it in the Valley, El Portal (though that's technically out of the Park), Wawona, etc. Of course, there are other towns you'll pass through if you're not entering from this area...Mammoth, Mariposa, Lee Vining...

EVERYTHING is expensive here--including the few gas stations. Fill up before you come into the park as gas tends to be about 20+ cents more per gallon than anywhere else in the state.

If you find yourself low on items and don't plan to leave the park, just buy what you absolutely need here. OH! And get your bear canister as well if you're camping, but I'm sure you already know that.

In the park, MUCH more than outside of it. I'd say like 15% more, at least.

Both Yosemite and Curry Village have grocery stores that sell a wide variety of goodies. They are very popular as you can imagine and while it is best to bring as much of your supplies with you as you can, they are not price gorging as much as they could considering their remote location.

We had brought our main food stuffs with us but this was a place to buy treats like ice cream which is obviously too perishable to cart around in your cooler from San Francisco! They also have a good selection of beer. This is California, after all, one of the earliest proponents of the craft beer revolution so you don't have to drink Bud. We would buy a six and sit out on the patio outside.

Beer was not marked up as much as it could have been and it was still a lot cheaper than buying beer at a restaurant, even the pizza place was about double what you would pay in the store. Grab a pie, a six and enjoy.

    Tourist Trap or Help?

Located in the middle of Yosemite Village, the Village Store has plenty of drinks and groceries to satisfy not only the campers but the day tourists as well. It is more of a general store than a food store. Every kind of tourist related gift item from the rediculous to the sublime is available for purchase. Tour guide magazines, souvenirs, and film are included. If you are short on cash there is an ATM on site. Open all year round.

I am a sucker for shot glasses. So, when browsing around the store, I found all kinds of shot glasses, you know the kind to put alcohol in, not a tired, outdated drinking glass. No, this was the gen-u-wine 1 1/2 oz. , put your favorite booze in, shot glass. Found a set of four, I don't like to down shots alone, that met my criteria for a Yosemite shot glass. Now to find the bottle of tequila.

Most items are a little pricier that outside of Yosemite National Park, but hey, it's a long drive to the closest town.

  • Be sure to check out the clearance corner at the main Yosemite shop at Yosemite Village - some very real bargains can be found on souvenirs including sweatshirts, T-shirts, pyjamas, watches, bags and other bri-a-brac items for taking home to friends and loved ones. Discounts can be up to 75% - well worth a browse!

  • Gasoline is extremely expensive in California these days. It's REALLY expensive in Yosemite! Try to fill up in Oakdale, or one of the other nearby towns before going into the park.

I got a pair of hiking pants at this store. Of course they mark the price up like crazy but I didn't really care at the moment.

Trail guides, gifts post cards are also available.
