Private Jets at Aspen Airport by Callavetta Aspen's airport is chock full of private jets as well as smaller private planes. But if you forgot to make the payment on your jet, or it happens to be in the shop just now, don't fret... there ARE other ways to get to Aspen! United Shuttle has nearly hourly flights into Aspen from Denver. If you are driving, 82 is an easy drive from Glenwood Springs (about 3 hours from Denver on I 70). Once you get to Aspen, there are rental cars available at the airport or a system of free shuttles will take you nearly everywhere you need to go. There is also a shuttle from Aspen to Snowmass and Buttermilk ski areas. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

by goingsolo The best way to get to Aspen is to drive, because the scenery en route is spectacular. The best drive, according to the locals, is to exit I-70 at CO 91 (#195), head south on US24 and then take CO 82 over Independence Pass. This route is closed in winter (approx Labor Day to Memorial Day.) I bypassed this route since I'd heard it was a scary drive with winding roads and sheer drops. As an alternative, and a still scenic approach, tak I-70 to Glenwood Springs and take CO 82 southeast to Aspen. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by goingsolo Its not a means of traveling through the main portion of Aspen, but Maroon Creek road leads to the campgrounds and hiking trails near the Maroon Bells. The road is closed to vehicles in summer, in order to reduce traffic, but there's a bus from the transit center in the middle of Aspen that runs through the road, providing transportation to this area. The Maroon Bells in Fall by Callavetta Not far from Aspen are the Maroon Bells. Said to be the most photographed peaks in Colorado, it's easy to see why. During the summer months the road is closed to car traffic and the Bells can only be accessed by Tour Bus. Busses run every half hour and will take you to the base of the Bells, where there is a lovely lake. After Labor Day, passenger cars are allowed. A $10.00 day fee gives you 5 days of access to the park. The drive from highway 82 to the base of the Bells is a climb of nearly 2,000 feet. On the sunny fall Wednesday that I made this trip there were scores of cyclists and people on funny skate "skis" going up the road. Those Aspenites are certainly a healthy athletic lot! Maroon Creek Road by Callavetta The road to the base of the Maroon Bells is beautiful, with lots of opportunities to stop and take pictures. Artists stop along the route and try to catch the colors with their paints. It's just lovely. Leave a Comment Address: Maroon Creek RoadDirections: Go after Labor Day to enter the park with your car and have free access.

Maroon Bells by goingsolo The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness occupies 181,000 acres, containing wide basins, alpine meadows, colorful cliffs, marshy tundra resembling interior Alaska, craggy rock faces and lush evergreen groves, 7 peaks topping 14k ft and 26 over 13k ft. The area is protected under the Wilderness Act of 1964.The Maroone Bells began as iron-bearing sediments beneath an ancient sea, before they metamorphosed into red rock, lifted skyward over millions of years, then, sculpted by glaciers, produced the awesome peaks we know today. Cathedral Lake by goingsolo At 13,500 ft, it is considered CO's highest trail-accessible pass. The hike begins along the Cathedral Lake trail and the first 3.2 miles experiences a 2, 000 ft elevation gain. The trail begins among aspens then breaks off into open meadows and rock slide areas. After the 1st 2 miles, the trail climbs in a series of switchbacks to the basin. At that point, the right hand fork leads to Electric Pass and the left another 1/4 mile to Cathedral Lake. The electric pass route then reaches timberline, and climbs through waist high willows and climbs another 1,600 feet in 1.5 miles. Heading up to electric pass, the summit of cathedral peak is visible, along with an extensive rock glacier. The trail switchbacks to a ridge which extends to Leahy Peak. The trail then climbs along Electric Pass Peak to reach the Electric Pass. Leave a Comment Directions: 1/2 mile west of Aspen on 82 to Castle Creek Road 12 mi south to a gravel road that turns right and its another 1/2 mi to the trailhead.

snowmass creek by goingsolo The lower few miles of the Snowmass Creek trail have been described as a "piece of cake". I'm not sure that I'd agree, but, then again, when you're hiking in this altitude, everything is relative. The trail does start off slowly as a gradual walk through unconnected beaver ponds, open meadows and lush forests. Leave a Comment

The gondola operates in summer and takes you to the summit of Aspen mountain. Unfortunately, it wasn't yet operating in May because it wasn't summer yet, but I hear its not to be missed. Leave a Comment
