A walking tour full of stories of Ghosts, Murder & all of Aspen's dirty little secrets. I've lived in Aspen for awhile and found it a great thing to do when friends visit. My favorites were the ghosts at the Red Light District & Ghosts at the Hotel Jerome.

Hike to Crestted Butte

As the crow flies, Crestted Butte is located 12 miles from Aspen. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive - 110 miles. The hike over East Maroon Pass is spectacular and takes about 6 hours. If you don't want to hike back, you can arrange for transportation back to aspen - via van or on horseback. Best time to go for wildflowers in full bloom is August.

Silver Queen Gondola Ride of your Life

View from Aspen Mountain

The Silver Queen Gondola travels 21/2 miles to the 11,212-foot summit of Aspen Mountain in just 18 minutes, with spectacular views of the Elk Mountains and the town of Aspen.

I will confess that the gondolas do get a touch warm during the ride and if you are at all nervous of the trip, you should take some water with you. During summer storms the gondolas can stop mid route or shut down for several hours until the threats of lightening have passed, so early afternoon can be a difficult time for the visit.

We took this gondola up to the Roof of Aspen to a wedding for two friends of ours and had a wonderful time. The service at both the bottom and top of the ride was wonderful.

Atop the mountain, visitors will find a free Frisbie-golf course, the Sundeck Restaurant and plenty of deck chairs from which to soak in the scenery.

Open daily, June 11–Sept. 5, and Sept. 10-11, 10AM–4PM. Tickets are available on the Gondola Plaza. Weekdays: $19 for adults; $15 for youths, age 13-17, and seniors; and $10 for children, ages 4 to 10. Weekends: $21 for adults; $17 for youths, age 13-17, and seniors; and $12 for children, ages 4 to 10. A weekly pass is available for $38 for adults, $30 for youths and seniors, and $20 for children.

Aspen

Walking the final steps up a high pass is no less exciting than reaching the summit of a giant peak. Views open up in all directions; rows of snow capped mountain ranges stretch far into the distance like white waves in a choppy sea. T.A. Baron, A Walk in the Wilderness.

snowmass creek

The lower few miles of the Snowmass Creek trail have been described as a "piece of cake". I'm not sure that I'd agree, but, then again, when you're hiking in this altitude, everything is relative. The trail does start off slowly as a gradual walk through unconnected beaver ponds, open meadows and lush forests.

Maroon Creek Road

The road to the base of the Maroon Bells is beautiful, with lots of opportunities to stop and take pictures. Artists stop along the route and try to catch the colors with their paints. It's just lovely.

The Maroon Bells in Fall

Not far from Aspen are the Maroon Bells. Said to be the most photographed peaks in Colorado, it's easy to see why. During the summer months the road is closed to car traffic and the Bells can only be accessed by Tour Bus. Busses run every half hour and will take you to the base of the Bells, where there is a lovely lake.

After Labor Day, passenger cars are allowed. A $10.00 day fee gives you 5 days of access to the park. The drive from highway 82 to the base of the Bells is a climb of nearly 2,000 feet. On the sunny fall Wednesday that I made this trip there were scores of cyclists and people on funny skate "skis" going up the road. Those Aspenites are certainly a healthy athletic lot!

Maroon Bells

The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness occupies 181,000 acres, containing wide basins, alpine meadows, colorful cliffs, marshy tundra resembling interior Alaska, craggy rock faces and lush evergreen groves, 7 peaks topping 14k ft and 26 over 13k ft. The area is protected under the Wilderness Act of 1964.The Maroone Bells began as iron-bearing sediments beneath an ancient sea, before they metamorphosed into red rock, lifted skyward over millions of years, then, sculpted by glaciers, produced the awesome peaks we know today.
