Boulder Transportation

Boulder has an absolutely amazing collection of bike paths, lanes, etc. that allow you to go just about anywhere in Boulder safely and, efficiently. Just as importantly, you will discover as many Boulderites have, that biking is much more fun than driving a car and trying to find parking. You can rent very good bikes at a variety of places but my favorite place is University Bikes since I got my bike there and get it repaired and tuned there. The staff is knowledgeable and they have a huge fleet of bikes so that you can find one that fits you.

Biking Tips:

What to take: Take water in the container, you are at high altitude and will get dehydrated very quickly! Take food in case you decide to lock up and go for a quick hike (cliff bars and luna bars are decent trail food). Neverf forget to lock up! Don't forget the sunscreen, the altitude makes for memorable sunburns. Get a map; we have tons of paths, lanes, etc. Take busfare with you; if you get lost, tired or crash, you can put your bike on the front of the bus and toodle back to your hotel.

If you need help: Ask other bicyclists if you are lost; they will help you.

Warnings: Watch out for world champion cyclists, crazed rollerbladers and toddlers while you are on the bikepath, particularly the Broadway bikepath.

Make eye contact with drivers if you are crossing an intersection, most of our motorists watch for cyclists but not the ones on cell phones!!!

Don't forget to use a light if you bike at night unless you want a $50.00 ticket! (Also please take a light if you kayak at night, singing is all very well for signalling your presence but it is not good enough to avoid collisions or rocks).

Boulder is located in north central Colorado. It is serviced by bus from Denver but getting around the area is probably done most easily in your own vehicle. The town itself is very bike friendly and mountain biking is very popular in the canyon surrounding town. Though it is not a true gateway town for Rocky Mountain National Park, it makes for a great stop before or after visiting the national park.

Typical distances: Boulder to Denver-30 miles/half hour or an hour in traffic. Boulder to Rocky Mountain National Park-35 miles/one hour. Boulder to Fort Collins-65 miles/1 hour 15 minutes.

Boulder seems to be constantly experimenting with the latest 'trends' in traffic management. We've got traffic circles, flashing pedestrian walks, count-down timers on crosswalks. Here's how it works. If someone is already in the traffic circle, they have the right of way. Hopefully they'll use their blinker to let you know if they are going to turn in front of you, but don't count on it. It seems like they add a flashing pedestrian walk at least once a week, which are located on very busy streets like Broadway, Pearl and 30th. The flashing lights stay on well after the pedestrian has crossed, so sometimes you can't tell if more pedestrians are coming. Cyclists are usually pretty good about using hand signals to give you a clue where they are going, but not always. If you come from a city without a lot of pedestrians or cyclists, pay more attention as they are all over the place.

If you are not married to your car, it is possible to visit Boulder. Take the AB bus from the Denver Airport to Boulder. It connects with all the local routes at the main station (get a transfer on the airport bus and use it on your next ride). If you want to go up into the mountains, Enterprise and Avis have car rental locations in Boulder and the daily rate is a lot cheaper than at the airport. Enterprise will pick you up at your hotel.

I've never seen so many bikes in my life! It seems everyone, and I mean everyone, has a bike here. There are racks all over town and many people even bike to work. I didn't bring biking gear, but several shops will rent you bikes, a lock and helmut.

The Peak to Peak Highway is the first road in Colorado to receive the honor of being named a scenic byway. The highway runs along the front range to Estes Park at its north end, passing through small mountain towns en route to Boulder. It is a scenic alternative to the main highway for the drive between Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Drive 17 miles west of Boulder on Canyon Blvd.

En ésta y otras rutas hay un servicio llamado park and ride. En algunas paradas hay hasta 900 lugares para estacionar uno su auto y ahí abordar el autobús! Es una manera de descongestionar el tráfico y es más económico para uno. Si traes bici y te cansas de pedalear los autobuses también disponen de portabicis al frente!
