Canon City Things to Do

  • Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway -...

We found this on our way to the Royal Gorge Bridge and we are so glad we stopped in. It is deceiving from the road but this is an actual western town like in the old days. There is a full street and then a 1/2 street of old buildings just like you would see back in the old west. There was a lot to see and do for the price. My kids really liked the...

  • The Grand Canyon of the Arkansas

Better known as the Royal Gorge, this spectacular canyon is not even the deepest one in Colorado but it is probably the most well known and popular one, perhaps because of the awe-inspiring bridge which crosses it. This 80-year-old bridge, at 1,053 feet, is the highest suspension bridge over water in the world. Tourists are challenged to walk...

  • Royal Gorge Route Railroad

This train starts daily from Cañon City through Royal Gorge and is said to be one of the most spectacular railroads of the world. The train is very slow along Arkansas River, 10 miles in 30 min.The picture of the twisting train through the Gorge along the river was taken from the suspension Bridge.

  • Dinosaur Depot Museum

Any dinosaur enthusiast, young or old, should visit this small museum. This part of Colorado has yielded a treasure trove of fossils, including new dinosaur species. The Depot Museum has some excellent fossils, including the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton in the world. One fossil is still alive. It's the gingko tree, from the Far East. This...

But if you want a spectacular view of this gorge, then this is it.There are other attractions here. The Aerial Tramway takes visitors on a two-way trip over the gorge, with more great views. The...

  • Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Since 1879, this scenic railroad has taken visitors through the Royal Gorge. Passengers have marvelled at the towering cliffs, over 1,000 feet high. They've watched white-water rafters pass by on the Arkansas River. And anyone who visits Colorado should see this.Special excursions offer a variety of features: glass-topped domes, dinners,...

The most fun place here for the kids! An old west town, they have magic shows,re-enacted gun fights on the street, lots of old buildings to explore, the mystery house building,a horse carriage ride, and a train ride where you can get a pretty good view of the gorge. Not as cool as Old Tucson in Arizona, but if you haven't been there already and you...

The sand dunes are not one hour from Canon City. Try more like two hours 2 and a half if you use I 25. but i would so recomend it. if you use road 50 it is a curvey road that folowes the river most the way, and during the summer yoiu can see the rafters. i live there and can see them everyday . i would recomend to go to Zapatsa Falls too. al the...

  • More shots of the train trip

To see the Royal Gorge you have two choices, drive across the suspension bridge, and/or take a train trip Up top you will find a petting zoo, donkey rides, wagon rides, fake gun fights, a tram that goes across the gorge, a tram that goes down to the bottom, and souvenir shops and eateries. This would be a good choice if you have kids in the car.If...

  • Dinosaur Museum

Do Not bother going to this. Although inexpensive, this museum? is a joke. It took us 10 minutes to go through the two rooms. Our kids said: this is it? We vote a big NO for this place and so did the kids. Sorry.

  • BuckSkin Joe Train Ride

By far the best value if you want to see the Royal Gorge on a budget. Buy the Combo tickets at Buckskin Joe's to see the old town and the train ride. It is a better deal. The train is open, so if applicable bring a sweatshirt, etc. Train takes you at the edge of the gorge where you can then get out and snap some pictures. If you have a decent zoom on...

  • Royal Gorge or Royal Gouge?

One of the main reasons we came to Canon City is we had planned on visiting the Royal Gorge. So it was a great disappointment to us when we came here only to realize that it would cost around $80 (with coupons) for our family to see a man made bridge. A royal Gouge in our opinon. We chose not to go inside as well as several others ahead and behind...

Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the world. Towering 1,053 feet over the Arkansas River. It is amazing. I arrived just as the sun was setting, it was beautiful. • World's steepest Incline Railway

Take this Incline Railway down to the Arkansas River. Yes this railway is VERY steep. This railway has always kind of a cage for 2 persons. You have to stand up in this railway.Down in the Gorge the temperature is much higher and no wind blows here. It's adventurous to descend by this railway in between of high rocks.

  • Culinary delight on a budget

I'd feel equally at ease in my black gown or riding jeans. Comfy atmosphere, the chef trained at the famous Johnson and Wales. French influence but the steaks are prime American. Never had a dish yet I didn't enjoy. It's worth the short hop to Florence and less pricey compared to other quality gourmet restaurans. I can't help it. Have to pig out...

Sheer red granite cliffs drop over 1,000 feet to the Arkansas river. The suspension bridge is composed of wooden planks which feel uncomfortably like a rickety seaside pier. Canon City What to Pack

  • morgandk's Profile Photo

by morgandk Written Sep 2, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: Make sure you have a day pack when you go into the mountains. Tenderfoots can easily get disoriented and lost. Colorado weather changes rapidly, so be prepared.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Boots. Heavy wet wear for the rafting adventures.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Canon City sells everything you need.

Photo Equipment: You can get all needs locally.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring clothes to raft in, hike in, sightsee, dance the clubs, golf, and rock climb. It is all in Canon City.

Miscellaneous: Sunscreen...Elevation is a mile high. Closer to the sun.

  • Power loss

Walk across the bridge and take a look down. Visit the viewpoints on the other side of the canyon. When the power came back to the tram leading down to the canyon ground is my fondest memory of Royal Gorge. Because for half an hour we were hanging somewhere in the middle between the sky and deep ground of the gorge because of a power loss of the...
