Move over, Zebulon Pike. MY family on Pike's Peak by pchamlis Pike's Peak, discovered and conquered in the 19th century by Zebulon Pike, dominates the landscape to the west of Colorado Springs. Even though this grand mountain stands 14,110 feet above sea level at the summit, it's surprisingly easy for the common traveler to match Pike's feat of standing at its summit. There are two ways to achieve you goal. (1) You can take the Pike's Peak Cog Railway, which we did NOT do. Not sure the exact cost, but trains go up and down every 30 minutes or so. (2) You can DRIVE yourself. This is our plan. It costs $10 per adult and $5 per child under 16, or you can pay $35 per car for up to 7 occupants. The actual drive is 19 miles, in which you gain about 6,000 vertical feet. It will take a minimum of two hours, round trip. Not a lot at the top, but it's not everyday in America that you get to ascend to an altitude of 14,110 feet without the help of Boeing Corporation technology. BTW, rest easy and go slow. Not a lot of air up there! Leave a Comment Address: Pike's Peak Highway, west of Colorado SpringsDirections: From Colorado Springs, go west on US 24. After passing through Manitou Springs, look for the signs announcing the Pike's Peak highway, which turns to the left. (The cheesy North Pole attraction is on the same highway)

Kissing Camels by grandmaR When Bob was transferred to Monterey California to go to Post Graduate School, we stopped to visit relatives in Colorado. At that point, I found out that the 'Kissing Camels' in the Garden of the Gods was not what I always thought that it was. The Kissing Camels are on each side of the hole in the rock at the top center of the picture (which was taken at dusk). When I looked at it from across the valley I saw the whole rock structure as the humps of camels with their heads and necks somewhat separated (on the south side). (I don't have a picture of that to illustrate.) Leave a Comment

The website for the USAFA as of Oct 2001 says: "In response to heightened national security conditions, access to the Air Force Academy is now limited to official business. "Personnel holding a valid Department of Defense identification card, including military and dependent ID cards, civilian employee ID cards and USAF Academy contractor ID cards will be allowed access." I have not been there recently. In the chapel, the tetrahedrons form the walls and the 99-foot-high pinnacled ceiling of the Protestant Chapel. Stained glass windows with eight basic colors graduate from cool to warm, moving from liturgical colors of Advent to Easter, from the narthex (entrance) to the chancel (altar area). Leave a Comment Address: 2304 Cadet Dr # 324Phone: (719) 333-7843Directions: Take exit number 156B- toward N ENTRANCE AIR FORCE ACADEMY. Merge onto N GATE BLVD (Gate access required). Kissing Camels at the Garden of the Gods by kschatterbox My favorite place in Colorado Springs is the Garden of the Gods. It is free to the public. How did it get its name you ask? Well back in 1859 two surveyors saw this place. One of the guys named M. S. Beach, who related this incident, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden" when the country grew up. His companion, Rufus Cable, a "young and poetic man", exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods." It has been so called ever since. In the 770 acres of this great land there rock formations that have names as: Kissing Camels (which one of the camels lost their hump due to lightning), Siamese Twins, Balanced Rock, Gateway rocks and much more. Visitors can rock climb, have guided nature walks, mountain biking, road biking, self tours and horeback trails. (which we did once but it was so many years ago I can not remember who we did it through. But it was a blast!!) The park is open from 5am - 9pm from November 1- April 30 and from 5am to 11pm from May 1 to October 30. IMPORTANT: If you do want to climb make sure to register at the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. Leave a Comment Address: 1805 N. 30th St. at Gateway RoadOther Contact: (719)634-6666

by John195123 Pikes Peak is a very large part of the COS landscape. At over 14,000 feet, Pikes Peak grants quite a view of the city. You can drive up to the summit by car, hike up, or take the cog railway located in Manitou Springs. The Bar Trail takes a while (over a day) to hike up, and is best during the late spring, summer, early fall. Leave a Comment Directions: West of the city, pretty hard to miss. From downtown, take Colorado Avenue into Manitou Springs, and follow signs for Cog Railway. I don't know how much it costs, but it is worth the price.

I had the privilege of touring the Air force academy with a USAF academy graduate friend. As we walked through the campus and visited the beautiful Cadet Chapel, the interesting Goldwater Visitor and falcon Stadium he started walking and talking slower. Finally he advised he could not take anymore. It was a very interesting experience having live through the hazing of the late 1960 early 70 and achieving-- as an Air Force Physician the rank of Lt General -- he could not face the personal trauma of what he went through as a cadet. I understand it has chanced a lot in 30 years. It is a very interesting and beautiful campus well worth the visit. The Visitors' Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Academy is open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily Leave a Comment Address: US Air Force Academy, USAFA, Colorado 80840,Phone: 719-333-2025Directions: Enter through either the North Gate, which can be accessed from Exit 156B on Interstate 25, 14 miles north of downtown Colorado Springs South Gate, can be accessed from Exit 150 on Interstate 25.Website: http://www.usafa.af.mil/index.cfm?catname=AFA%20Homepage Other Contact: pa.comrel@usafa.af.mil

Seven Falls - Colorado Springs humming birds by Ekahau, 4 more photos Just the humming birds made this place worth it to me. so many Humming birds there little wings had a humming sound it suddenly downed on me yes that is why they are humming birds. also I am a sucker for chipmunks they are so cute. But t has a bit of a reputation as being a little tourist trap-py and commercialized. (Lots of nice free falls and nature walks in this part of the USA). If you are the sort that like to see Indian dances, three gift shops and take a cave elevator to a lookout this is your place. For those who want to see some "natural beauty" but really are not able to hike than this is also a good spot with the elevator - to observation deck near top of falls. open every day of the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and New Years Day. Leave a Comment Address: 2850 S. Cheyenne Canyon Road, Colorado Springs, CoPhone: (719) 632-0765Directions: from Interstate 25 go West on Cheyenne BoulevardWebsite: http://www.sevenfalls.com/
