Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Springs

Close to the Cheyenne Mountain zoo and included in the admission price to the zoo.
The shrine is dedicated to the cowboy and homourist who died in a plane crash in 1935.
It is located in a beautiful area and affords great views of Colorado Springs.

This is a really nice zoo. It's built into the side of a mountain, so walking around will wear you out a little, but the views are excellent.

At 6,800 feet, this is the highest zoo in the world. It combines a collection of over 700 species with great views of Colorado Springs and the plains. It covers 146 acres. Check out the primate house. Another high point is the giraffe exhibit, where you can buy food for the animals. This is your chance to get really up close and personal with the giraffes. And everyone loves the cute and playful meerkats.

Weather permitting, be sure to ride the Mountaineer Sky Ride, which offers the best views.

One of Colorado Spring's hotspots of activity. Nestled on the slopes of Cheyenne Mountain, just below the infamous "Gold Camp Road" and Buddhist temple, snug in the middle of elegant housing communities just above the richy-rich Broadmoor, is a pretty elaborate zoo that allows close spaces in getting to know the animals. 146 mountainous acres with close to 800 animals of every variety. Also has a skyride and a restaurant. Originally founded in 1926 by philanthropist Spencer Penrose to house his growing collection of exotic animals that originally started out south of town where Fort Carson's Turkey Creek Ranch now exists. In 1938 the zoo was established as a non-profit public trust for the people of Colorado Springs to "provide recreation, education, conservation and scientific facilities in the field of zoology and related subjects, and to preserve the Zoo in perpetuity for the people of the Pikes Peak region." The zoo goes out of their way to make each attendee an active participant. Many of the animal areas for the animals that aren't threatening to humans, are open-aired with little to no fences like the kangaroos, the giraffe's, peacocks, and other critters. A little pricey but a wonderful experience. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Cheyenna Mountain Zoo isn't the best zoo I've ever visited, but considering it's relatively small size it's well worth a visit. It's kind of an odd combination of older, less spacious, and less imaginitive exhibits along with some much newer and better ones. The giraffe exhibit in particular is excellent because the layout allows visitors to get righ up close to the giraffes and feed them. A word of warning though: Bring comfortable shoes because the zoo is on a mountainside and has some very steep walkways. It is also quite expensive unfortunately.

This zoo is located on Cheyenne Mountain. It's very proud of the fact that it's one of 5 accredited zoos in the country that don't get any taxpayer money. Some of the exhibits are of the old-fashioned cage variety, and that's very depressing. However, the zoo is making an effort to improve the facilities for the animals. They have a nice giraffe exhibit where you can feed the giraffes, and they have nice gorilla, orangutan, and chimpanzee enclosures. The zoo has tigers, lions, bears, 2 elephants whose enclosure really needs to be improved, and various other animals.

Set on the side of Cheyenne Mountain, the setting for the zoo is spectacular. There are a lot of animals to see in the zoo. You will have a chance to see a lot of the larger animals such as giraffes, bears, and the big cats.

The zoo is awesome! It is placed on the side of a mountain, so I think you start from the top and work your way down or something like that--there is a little bus that can take you through--even up and down-hill. The giraffes are one of the highlights.
And the view from the zoo is extrordinary!
