Denver Local Customs

First of all, the people in Denver love their outdoor activites. In the winter, most everyone goes up to the mountains to ski or snowboard, and during the summer, people bike and run. The people in Denver love to watch their football and hockey, but they're not really into baseball or basketball. Popular sports to play here are golf, tennis, and even lacrosse and rugby. It's interesting, though, because even though people are active in Denver, it's also spread out, so people drive almost everywhere (almost no one walks to where they're going). There's beautiful scenery in the mountains to the west, Rocky Mountain National Park to the north, and Garden of the Gods to the south.

The city of Denver is heavily populated with Hispanics, and many Denver people speak at least a little Spanish. There's also a semi-large Asian population, but few other minority groups are adequately represented in Denver. Denver people are also very polite and are always willing to say hello.

On the downside, although the city itself is semi-liberal and young, the suburbs house very "uppity" people. Colorado is a Republican state, and people here love large corporations and large automobiles! Most stores and restaurants are corporate-owned, so there's not too much you can find that is unique to Denver (espeically in the suburbs). Most people drive SUVs, and although Denver is a small city, the highways are always packed.

All in all, the Denver area is a beautiful place to visit, and there's a lot of naturally-occuring scenery that you shouldn't miss. If you go to Denver, don't miss the mountains! As for the food and shopping, though, Denver is probably near the bottom of that list!

It took a couple of these houses before it dawned on me that they have a 2 car garage and then a small 3rd one with a separate door. My daughter explained to me that the 3rd is for snowmobiles! I suspect they get used for all sorts of things and I only saw them in newer and more expensive neighborhoods. This is a new development advertising homes starting at the "mid $400s." I could use a third garage just for junk.

Denver is a very active and outdoorsy city. If you are not in to any of this: be it running, team sports, swimming, hiking, climbing, skiing, etc. You will usually be the odd one in the group. However, if you have never tried any of this before, but have always wanted to, Denver is the perfect place. Not only does it have the venues, i.e. big parks, sport complexes, and of course the Rocky Mountains, but you can be sure that you will always be inspired and motivated to do these things as you will for sure never do it alone.

So, I dare you. If you have never been an active person, and you are going to Denver, it's the perfect situation for you to start!

In Denver, when you give, or get, directions people will always use the references "it's east off," "south off," etc. This is because everything is Denver is relative to the mountains, which are in the west. Hence, people expect you to always know where west is, and hence where north, east, and south is.

So, just keep track of the mountains (it's not hard...unless it's REALLY dark) and you will know what people are talking about.

Coloradoans are very touchy about their parks and wilderness areas. So if you are in a state park, for the day or camping, Don't litter, take the advice about Bears (if there is bear country info posted), or you are likely to get an earful. They see too many people trashing their beautiful state and they will often be vocal about any abuse if they see it.

People in Denver as a whole have excellent personalities, I mean I wrote about this once but there is no convincing me otherwise that hands down Denver has the smartest, least pretentious, friendliest people in the country by far..

You will not find stuck-up people in Denver either, people in Denver arent the very materialistic,arrogant,stuck-up type that you will find in a lot of cities (especailly eastern ones, like the one I live in now)

Denver is a very progressive city....
So I would say it will probubly like a coastern city than a midwestern city

Denver has a very large hispanic population (growing up there it seems about half hispanic at least in the city proper) they are very nice and are very local (many of denvers hispanics lived in new mexico and colorado when it was owned by spain) Denver hispanic community is very embracing and most denver hispanic are socially liberal compared to hispanics in say chicago or texas so just something like might be informative

People in Denver also are very, very friendly (by far the friendliest in the country, and the exact opposite in Rudesburg im sorry Pittsburgh,PA) you will notice it immediately so if somebody starts talking to you, talk to em, they dont want anything they just want to have a chat on the way too work or dinner or something

oc Baggs was Denver's notorious conman. In the late 1800's he would sell fake gold bricks to unsuspecting people. Doc's "gold" bricks were nothing more than ordinary bricks covered with a thin layer of gold. Doc's scam included setting up a fake portable office which contained what appeared to be a safe. The "safe was actually a painting- a mosaic of numbered thin wooden panels, each about the size of a cigar box lid. A fabric was placed on the panels and the painting placed on top of the fabric. The entire "safe" could be folded up quickly and carried away.
Doc's office door- whose glass panel bore the inscription "Manager" or "Superintendent" depending upon the occasion (Doc also sold shares of non existent underground mining wealth) could be moved quickly to its hiding place behind one of the walls. At times, Doc would hire other cons to pose as clerks and sit behind a counter and work on paper mache ledgers.
Once the fool and his money had been parted, Doc would fold up his safe, hide the doors behind cavaties in the walls and Doc and his fellow cons would exit. At times, a victim would summon the Denver police and attempt to lead them to where Doc's office was located. But the portable disguised office could not be found.
Michael Spangler, a Denver lawman, arrested Doc on the charge of "bunco steering." Doc won his day in court by pointing out that, even in a very large dictionary, the words "bunco steering" did not exist and these terms were not contained in Denver statutes.
Prior to leaving Denver for good, Doc sold a "gold" brick to H.M. Smith of Leadville for $20,000. Two years later, the brick was analyzed and determined to be a fraud.
