packing for the weather

  • The weather fluctuates a lot anytime of the year. It never freezes in Denver in July or August - but it has snowed here in June. Winters can be cold but sunny - so bring a heavy jacket and sunglasses. The sun reflecting off the snow can be blinding. Bring shorts anytime from April through October.

always bring a tent and sleeping bag when camping in the mountains. You never know how cold it will get at night or if it will Thunderstorm.

  • Take little with you, and leave little behind!

Depending on the time of year, be prepared for anything. A good pair of hiking boots is just as stylish in the city as out.

A roll of toilet tissue is a good idea.... ya' never know...

  • Big backpack if you plan on traveling up to the mountains, etc.

In the Winter you should bring a wide range of clothing because our winters are very mild for the most part and, while you may need a sweater and long underwear you may also just need a t-shirt and khakis. It all depends on what Mother Nature decides to bring with her that day. Our winter weather can change on a dime from 20 degrees and snow to 70 degrees and sunny.

In the summer it gets ridiculously hot here. It's just really unbelievable because most people don't associate heat with Colorado. The summers are hot and dry. You want to pack VERY light clothing (shorts, light tanks - no jeans or other heavy pants or shirts). If you are planning on going to the mts. then bring a few warmer things (sweaters, fleece, jeans), as it gets cold at night in the mts.
OH! Bring a rain coat also as we get thunderstorms pretty regularly in the spring and summer.

  • Sun Screen, Sun Screen, Sun Screen! Even in the winter, especially if you are going to spend much time up in the mountains.

  • Bring sunscreen with you. We are at a high altitude and the sun damage to your skin can be dangerous.

  • Really, the most important thing you can bring with you, is sunscreen. Denver is fortunate to have over 300 sunny days a year. If you are fair skinned, you will burn if exposed to the sun for too long. Bring sunscreen, and keep hydrated.

  • Denver is a bit higher then most people are use to, I find my family and friends from the other parts of the world get a bit tired more easily then the locals, Bottled water is a must if you plan on walking around. The tap water is fine to drink too. Another must even for us locals is lip balm and lotion as sometimes the winter dryness can be brutal!

  • As the weather in Denver is ever-changing (I've actually seen 3 seasons in just ONE day), plan your wardrobe for layers. That way if you're momentarily too warm you can take off a layer but still have the option to put it back on when the winds shift 10 minutes later.

As we are 1 mile closer to the sun, the sun is significantly brighter and more intense here. Sunglasses and Sunscreen are a must during anytime of the year!

If you are staying in the downtown Denver area, the merchants downtown capitalize on the fact that they have an almost 'captive consumer base' and increase prices accordingly. Prices in the suburbs and away from downtown are significantly lower.
