Surviving the Mile High City

Miscellaneous: Denver is a bit higher then most people are use to, I find my family and friends from the other parts of the world get a bit tired more easily then the locals, Bottled water is a must if you plan on walking around. The tap water is fine to drink too. Another must even for us locals is lip balm and lotion as sometimes the winter dryness can be brutal!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sandals are popular in the Denver area. Find a comfortable pair that have straps or something to attach to your foot. People here also wear a lot of khaki. Also, the temperature can wildly switch from day to day. We've been known to have a blizzard one day, and the next day reach over 60 degrees! Also, even in the summer, the temperature doesn't stay warm at all once the sun is down. So do yourself a favor and bring layers.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sunscreen and lotion! I grew up in the midwest, and we rarely used sunscreen and lotion. Here, you're so close to the sun, you need the sunscreen. Also, there's *very little* humidity here, which can be good because the heat doesn't feel as hot and the cold doesn't feel as cold. However, you skin can easily feel dry and itchy. In the summer months, everyone here wears sunglasses. That's not only a fashion trend; the sun and glare can be brutal.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: As the weather in Denver is ever-changing (I've actually seen 3 seasons in just ONE day), plan your wardrobe for layers. That way if you're momentarily too warm you can take off a layer but still have the option to put it back on when the winds shift 10 minutes later.

As we are 1 mile closer to the sun, the sun is significantly brighter and more intense here. Sunglasses and Sunscreen are a must during anytime of the year!

Miscellaneous: If you are staying in the downtown Denver area, the merchants downtown capitalize on the fact that they have an almost 'captive consumer base' and increase prices accordingly. Prices in the suburbs and away from downtown are significantly lower.

Prepare for anything

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Be prepared for any type of weather. In late May, a week after it had been snowing, the weather was in the 90s. It dropped into the 50s about a week or so later. So bring a range of clothing for different temperatures. As for the rain, that never lasts very long.

Luggage and bags: depends on how long you stay.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: comfy shoes. bring an umbrella and lite jacket even in summer.

Photo Equipment: lots of photo ops

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: camping is all around

Miscellaneous: It is cool in the mornings here and then gets overwhelmingly hot in the afternoons. Of course during the spring and summer months only. Bundle up if it is winter.

Luggage and bags: Take little with you, and leave little behind!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Depending on the time of year, be prepared for anything. A good pair of hiking boots is just as stylish in the city as out.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: A roll of toilet tissue is a good idea.... ya' never know...

packing for the weather

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: The weather fluctuates a lot anytime of the year. It never freezes in Denver in July or August - but it has snowed here in June. Winters can be cold but sunny - so bring a heavy jacket and sunglasses. The sun reflecting off the snow can be blinding. Bring shorts anytime from April through October.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: always bring a tent and sleeping bag when camping in the mountains. You never know how cold it will get at night or if it will Thunderstorm.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Really, the most important thing you can bring with you, is sunscreen. Denver is fortunate to have over 300 sunny days a year. If you are fair skinned, you will burn if exposed to the sun for too long. Bring sunscreen, and keep hydrated.
