    Cafe Star: Terrific little joint

by AcornMan Updated May 22, 2011

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

**NOTE - THIS PLACE IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS AS OF MAY 2011**

It was late Sunday morning. Our crew of intrepid party-goers was slow to wake up and even slower to get moving after a long night of cocktails. No one was in the mood to drive, but we were starving. Surely there was someplace within walking distance where we could get a decent breakfast (or was it brunch?).

Then, lo and behold, we spotted Cafe Star as we turned the corner onto Colfax. Like a beacon on a stormy night it drew us in and provided safe harbor. The waitress didn't mind a bit that we demanded one glass of ice water after another to rehydrate our depleted bodies, and even brought some pitchers (no doubt to make her job easier, but it helped us a lot too).

And the food? Well, it was fantastic. The menu is innovative without being excessively whimsical or frivolous. I knew we had a winner when the butter served with the bread had strawberry sauce mixed with it. Delicious, as was everything we ordered. Six people, six satisfied customers. No one had a single complaint. I left with a full stomach and the memory of a really outstanding meal. Sure, it was a bit on the pricey side, but we're not talking Denny's here. It is well worth the extra money.

Oh, and they even serve lunch and dinner (but do note that they are closed on Tuesdays).

Bistro Vendome: Larimer Street Patio French

by atufft Written May 1, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's hard to imagine good French in Denver, but his place was pretty good. Actually, the food was more a combination of fresh produce California style mixed with some French style food. The wine list was a mixture of French and California wines, and priced about right by the glass. I ordered a French Sauvignon Blanc, a plate full of mussels, and the special, a Crepe de Jour. My friend ordered the special also. The patio dining of this place is off the street, so the noise of Larimer is not a nuisance. This was lunch, and though it was only April, the weather was warm enough. There's also dining inside. Overall the atmosphere for this place was really good. Service was very good, but the waiter was inexperienced with respect to the wine list. The price for two was very reasonable at about $40- including tip.

Pearl Street Grill: Live Music and Good Local Brewed Beer

by atufft Written May 1, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place has an eclectic collection of American recipes that mix in international flavors as the chef wants. They serve a buffalo burger, and have a rotisserie with pork and chicken. As the country folk band played, I cupped my ear to hear the specials, then ordered a pint of the Mile Hi Pale Ale. I selected a pork loin that was served with a tropical mango salsa. My buddy ordered a burger. Price for two was $30- not including tip, which wasn't bad considering the quality of the beer I had ordered. See link below for more details. The images are taken in a low light situation, so please forgive the unpleasant colors...

Stella's Coffee Haus: Best of South Pearl Coffee Houses

by atufft Written May 1, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There actually are several good places to get coffee in South Pearl (e.g. Pajama Baking Company), but Stella's Coffee Haus remains the leader for ambiance and service. As the website says, the old house coffee shop with patio and rooms inside has many comfortable nooks and crannies for meditative study while sipping coffee or tea. There is free WIFI, but ask for the password. Artwork and creative interior design is a feature here, making the place a favorite hang out for college students and young professionals. A lot of the art is available for sale, as it is primarily the work of emerging artists in the area. Stella's also has a program of live music, and a great menu. It's a good place to buy bags of ground coffee or tea. I purchase a large latte to go and a slice of fresh apple pie, then sat on the patio near a charcoal fired warmer, where I could watch people walk by as I played with my iPad.

City o City: City o City, An ode, A lament

by leafmcgowan Updated Apr 4, 2011

One of Denver's premiere vegetarian restaurants, in the heart of capital hill, next to artsy shops and bars. Down tempo music with eclectic offerings of food, coffee, and drinks ... this hot spot will give any visitor a sensational zing for their zang. "City, O' City - An Ode, A Lament" is their motto, and implies the beginning of a poem to the City. It's a coffeehouse, it's a cafe, it's a restaurant. Wine, Ales, unique hard liquors, teas, espresso, drip coffee beans, gluten-free muffins, spelt flour cookies, vegetarian or vegan pizza, seitan fake-meats, every dish i tried at this fabulous restaurant was extremely delicious. Part of the WaterCourse Foods network. Rating 5 stars out of 5.

1278 Pennsylvania St., Denver, CO 80203

Denver's only full service Cyber Cafes ... an incredible hotspot of local activity from dancing, art gallery, poetry readings, a full bar, a full service restaurant, poolhall, the best jukebox in Denver, free wireless, and a venue for many events. Definitely a must-visit and must-hangout place to go in Denver's downtown. Conveniently located and home to a friendly and great staff, you won't be disappointed with this great place. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

A recent visit I tried out the internet service and the food .... Several wifi networks to choose from, there home based network is the fastest in the joint - just get the username and password from the barista. The food - absolutely delicious .... I had the club with cajun fries ... it was enormous! and delicious .... hit the spot. Iced chai with a shot of Baileys Irish Cream ... makes the afternoon go by so nicely ... not everyday you get a bar and a cafe and a restaurant all condensed into one ... fabulous! Friendly staff and great service. A must .... (visited 6/16/06).

Cool River Cafe: Top 10 Meal EVER...

    by cjg1 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a place were we went for dinner on a recommendation. I did not know at the time that it was a chain but it was quite good. We ate in the general main dining area where we were able to relax, people watch, and have a great meal.

    And so I say....

    Favorite Dish: WOW! WOW! WOW!

I eat. Its what I do. The food at this place blew my mind. I had an off menu special of Filet Mignon stuffed with crab meat. It was covered with a cream sauce. Having ordered it medium it was the greatest steak I've had in years outside of Argentina. Paired with a Pinot Noir it was a great meal.

The Fort ~ Morrison Colorado: A taste of Denver's Early West roots!

by dolphingoddess Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Featuring fine beef, buffalo, game and seafood, the Fort's award-winning menu offers a tantalizing selection of old and new foods of the Great West. While expensive* and certainly not an every day occasion, the Fort is charateristic of Denver's pioneer roots and is a dining experience you won't soon forget. So exceptional is the experience of dining at the Fort, on Saturday evening, June 21st 1997, The Summit of Eight and their wives met to share a dinner straight out of the 1840s at the Fort Restaurant, in Morrison, Colorado. The "Eight" were the leaders of the eight leading industrial nations of the world. Included were: U.S. President Bill Clinton, Canada's Prime Minister Jean Chretien, France's President Jacques Chirac, Germany's Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Italy's Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Japan's Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, Russia's President Boris Yeltsin, and Prime Minister Tony Blair of the United Kingdom.

The views from The Fort at dusk and after dark are absolutely breathtaking! You have an amazing view from within the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains of the city lights of downtown in the distance.

    * Dinner entrees range from $19.95 to $45.95, however some chef specials may exceed $44.95.

Favorite Dish: Their most popular dish is "The Fort's Game Plate." An Elk Chop, Buffalo Filet Medallion,
and a grilled teriyaki Quail. Served with Fort potatoes and chef's choice of vegetable. ($39.95)

    And a visit to Denver is never complete without trying our 'Rocky Mountain Oysters'. The Fort really knows how to do them right! {I won't tell you what they actually are because once you know you won't want to try them, but they do taste a little bit like chicken. :-)}

Taki's Japanese Restaurant: Healthy Japanese (Fast) Food

by WaRPer Written Aug 1, 2010

I ran into this one on the way to Cathedral Immaculate Conception. The restaurant is just located in between the Colorado State Capitol and the church. OK I admit, Japanese food in general is 'healthy' enough by itself, but this one is even healthier! Super lean meat, garden-fresh veggies, grease-free cooking and all. Taste-wise, it may not be as 'authentic' as it could be, but for all other aspects, we loved it! (It was the best way we can get away from chunks after chunks of steak and greasy Chinese food!).

Favorite Dish: (See pic) Tofu steak was such a new experience.

    Breakfast King: The King

by leafmcgowan Written Jan 24, 2010

The Breakfast King looks like a typical old-fashioned chain diner, but its a unique infamous greasy spoon of Denver sub-culture. All American roadside diner, with classic 70's style decor, bright orange booths, and a large menu of selections. The Westword calls it a "culinary time capsule" that still serves Coney Island hot dogs, chiliettes, and other classic foods. I second their observations. Located right next to I-25 its definitely a great stop off for weary travellers and a great place for breakfast after a night of clubbing. The service is fast, friendly, and the classical diner atmosphere you'd expect from the diner age. I had the Pancake sandwich with scrambled eggs inside ... delicious. Visited 1/17/2010. Elways - Downtown: Top of the Line Colorado Steakhouse

by SedonaDee Written Nov 5, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Warm, upscale, first class ambience paired with excellent and professional service made this a restaurant for a very special occasion. It had an extensive and impressive wine list.

Favorite Dish: I had a superb Filet Mignon, but the potatoes au gratin were crispy on top with generous cheese & just perfect. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the Prime Rib he ordered. Another person with us ordered a special with Red Snapper that he said was excellent. Elway's is known for its USDA Prime Hand-cut steaks and it lived up to its great reputation.

Palm Restaurant at The Westin Tabor Center: Classy Downtown Denver Restaurant

by SedonaDee Written Nov 5, 2009

I attended this as part of a group dinner hosted by a company. It was a lovely restaurant with superb service and excellently prepared food. We had a wonderful Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail that started the evening off right, followed by filet mignon, perfect green beans served family style and a potato au gratin type dish that was superb. Wonderful experience and if I lived in Denver I would come back often.

Favorite Dish: The filet was perfect, but I especially loved the potato au gratin dish.
