RTD, Denver by tejanasueca This is the public transportation provider in Denver. They have several buses and the expanding light-rail. The light -rail goes from south of downtown into down town. Since parking is expensive downtown, and option is to park at one of the light-rail stations instead. There is a fairly well developed bus system in Denver. The routes generally go in a south-north, or east-west direction. Major streets, such as Colorado (40), University (24), and Evans (20), etc have their own lines. The cost for a one way passage is currently $1.25 (you can change buses, but not the direction in which you are going). The also have buses that go to neighboring towns, such as Boulder, and the airport. However, these are more expensive. For more info, time tables, and maps, go to their website. Leave a Comment

Free Mall Ride, Denver by tejanasueca These electrically driven buses drive up and down 16th Street Mall everyday. No other traffic is allowed on this street. The buses go from Market Street Station in the north, to the end of 16th Street in the south. Get off at the south end station to go to the capitol. There is a bus stop at every major cross street, so just look for the sign and a bus will stop shortly. Since it's free, you can enter the bus at any of the doors. Leave a Comment

I-25, Denver, Colorado by tejanasueca There is currently a big construction project in Denver called the "T-Rex" project. Among other things, the project will expand the light-rail and widen Interstate 25. While this will eventually decrease the traffic problems in the city, the current construction is increasing it. Hence, try to stay away from I-25 during rush hour (8:30-9:30, 16:00-18:00). Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

the light rail meets the free bus by caffeine_induced78 This may make for a confusing looking picture. This is the Union Station light rail station - where the free Mall ends or begins depending on your perspective. The free Mall ride goes down the 16th street Mall which has been closed to traffic since 1980. The mall ride goes from Union Station to Broadway and back again. Just hop on the bus anywhere on 16th at a stoplight. If you miss one you will see another on the way - they are almost never more than 2 blocks apart. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Bicycles are allowed on the trains, but only in the rear cars and only during non peak hours. Leave a Comment

taxi by RJ1967 There are two main taxi companies in the Denver area - Yellow Cab, and Metro Cab. If you are at the airport or a downtown hotel you should be able to find one waiting for a fare, otherwise you have to call them. Downtown to DIA: The fare is a flat rate of $45!! The driver must run the meter (for insurance reasons), but no matter what the meter says, its $45. If you share a ride it's $45 for the first two passengers, then theres a fee of $0.20 for each additional passenger. If a driver tells you otherwise, he/she is wrong. I split a fare with 2 guys from South Africa and somehow we got soaked for $75 on what we thought should be $45. We all felt screwed. If you think you're being treated unfairly get the taxi number and the drivers name. Call your complaint to the main taxi phone number and ask for a supervisor. Don't get screwed, as I did. Not the Rio Grande Railroad by caffeine_induced78 Take the light rail to get to some of the outlying suburbs. No you can't get to the mountains on the light rail but a friend once told me that balancing on the light rail without holding onto anything is great balance practice for snowboarding. Some of the sites that you can get to on the light rail are Coors Field (baseball), The Pepsi Center (Hockey, Basketball), Six Flags Elitch Gardens Amusement Park, The African American Cowboy Museum, the Museo de los Americas and Buckhorn Exchange Restaraunt (10th and Osage station) and the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall. The light rail has two lines that split at the 10th and Osage station. The Orange line takes off on a short west route that ends at Union Station. The main Green line goes to the heart of Downtown and ends in the up and coming five points neighberhood. Parking is free at the park and rides and a zone boundary exists at Hampden Avenue. The fare needed is dependent on how far you are travelling, at the automated machine simply enter in your starting stop and your arrival stop and the machine will tell you how much you owe, a short juant within one zone will cost you $1.50. I suggest bringing enough change for the machine as dollar bills can be a pain in the machine. A new line is set to open in November of 2006 that runs to the Southeast suburbs of Denver. It does not serve many tourist areas, but is more designed to give commuters the option of using public rail over cars. Also, Denver area voters in their ability to plan and think about the future voted in a tax increase to pay for a massive new rail public transportation expansion due to open in about 2016, it is planned to provide over 100 miles of new rail! The Greyhound station is located in downtown Denver at 19th and Stout. You can get buses to all destinations in the midwest and western US from here. Heres some sample trips and travel times: Los Angeles: 4 trips daily. Travel time: 24 hours San Francisco: 4 trips, 28 hours Portand, OR: 4 trips 28 hours Chicago: 4 trips 24 hours Dallas: 4 trips 19 hours The biggest things to know is that the station is closed from midnight to 6am. There are buses that come and go during this time, but if you need to buy a ticket, or anythting like that, these services aren't available late at night. If you are waiting to transfer you'll be stuck outside with (basically) nowhere to go and nothing to do ~~~ See my USA intro page for all the general Greyhound information a traveler needs. ~~~ To find a telephone go to the 19th street entrance. If you're comming from the street, the phones are on the right. One of those phones is equipped with a TTY machine. (Those are phones specially equipped for the deaf). DIA Terminal building by RJ1967 Denver Airport is located about 30mi/50km east of downtown. Getting to and from downtown/the airport you can use the RTD Skyride service. The pickup/drop off locations at DIA have changed, as of Sept 7, 2003. They drop off between doors 507 and 511 on the east side of the terminal. The pick up spot is now located thru door 507 on island 5. For schedules go to www.rtd-denver.com . The trips to/from downtown cost $8. These buses serve other parts of the metro area as well. If your taking an RTD (Skyride) bus to the airport you pay the driver (cash only - have exact change). Greyhound also has 3-4 trips a day to the airport from downtown. Buy tickets for these buses at the station or online at: www.greyhound.com RTD and Greyhound can accomodate luggage. RTD has bike racks on the front of their buses. They can hold 2 bikes. They can also accomodate large luggage under the bus There are several taxi companies: Yellow Cab, phone 303-777-7777. Metro cab 303-333-3333. E-tickets: I was told (by ppl onine) that I could bring my e-ticket printout right to the gate and get my ticket. You can't do that. You have to either go to the ticket counter or go to those machines where you run your credit card thru and it issues the ticket. (I didn't see any of these. Where are they?) When you get your ticket at the gate you only get the ticket for the flight that day. If you have a return ticket you have to go to the ticket counter on the day of that flight to get that ticket. My opinion: Thats a pain in the a**, especially during holidays when the lines are miles long. There's no convenience in those tickets. Leave a Comment
