Beer Drinking Habits
When it comes to beer, Durango is the place. Durango has many micro-breweries making and serving a wide variety of brews. If you like beer do not visit Durango without trying a few of its local flavors. I suggest Ska Brewing Co (most local restaurants and all local liquor stores carry varieties of Ska). If you get a chance stop by their brewery and tasting room. My faves of Ska are Buster Nut Brown and True Blonde. Other brands to try are Durango Brewing Company, Steamworks Brewing Company and Carver's Brewing Company. The locals typically drink the local beer.

The area was once inhabited by the Pueblo indians and many artifacts remain in the area. According to local or state law (Im not sure as this is how it was relayed to me) those who find artifacts on their property are allowed to keep them. This law, or policy, has caused a great deal of dissent.
Land not for sale
The plot of land to the far left of the picture was almost zoned for a housing development. The locals were divided on whether to allow it or not. In the end, it failed by one vote and no houses were built. Looking at this picture, I'd have to say that's a good thing
Please, please, PLEASE don't jaywalk! It is dangerous and inconsiderate to the drivers on Main Ave! The street is crowded enough as it is without having to dodge jaywalkers every 1/4 block! So please, don't jaywalk, even if you see someone else do it!
I am a delivery driver for a restaurant on Main Ave, so I am acutely aware of this problem!
A common practice for us Durango natives is to drive down Main Street and see if we can pick the tourists from people who live here. The funny thing is that it's ridiculously easy sometimes! Try not to stick out and if you succeed, you win the game! Avid out of town players might even start in the game themselves, pointing out the more obvious tourists!
The Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike...
The Tissot-UCI Mountain Bike Cup is a series of sixteen races, eight cross-country and eight downhill/dual, that are held around the world. According to the UCI website
Durango has been called the mountain biking 'mecca' of the United States and was the site of the first UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in 1990. There are numerous past and present World and National Champions that call Durango home. There are links on this site to the current world standings.
Durango is a mountain bike...
Durango is a mountain bike mecca. The March 2001 issue of the magazine Mountain Bike said that, *For any mountain biker who believes in heaven, Durango is it. It simply doesn't get any better.* (Just thought I'd let all you bikers out there know this.) July 13-15, 2001 was the 30th anniversary of The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, one of the longest continuous running races in the United States, with a consistent participant number of 2,000. River of lost souls
I was told that "Animas" is a Native American word meaning "lost souls" and that the river is known as the River of Lost Souls
