    Rafting the Animas River

by Easty Written Jun 17, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Durango is located on the Animas River. This river between Durango and Silverton was quite rough. I didn't see any rafters on my railroad excursion, so I don't know whether they allow rafting on that part of the river or it was too early. However, there was a hut on Main Ave offering rafting packages. i would imagine that you would have to be an expert rafter to go on the Animas River.

    Downtown Durango

There were many nice shops in downtown Durango, including bookstores and clothing stores. Main Avenue had many bars and saloons, which is needed in the wild west. It is a great area to spend a couple of hours.

Just north of Durango, the road crosses through the San Juan National Forest, which bears the same name as the mountain range. Its a beautiful drive, although the mountain passes are steep and narrow.

    Million Dollar highway

by goingsolo Updated Apr 22, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Highway 550, which runs between Durango, is referred to as the million dollar highway. It is arguably the most scenic drive in all of Colorado. The highway passes over three separate mountain passes en route to Ouray. This picture was taken en route across one of those passes. It snowed the day before and, although the road was plowed, there were piles of snow flanking it.

    Animas Mountain

Animas mountain is located within the city limits of Durango. Its a great place to hike and see the view of the entire town. The entire hike is about 5 miles and has about 1000 ft elevation gain, but there are several shorter trails of about 2 miles or so, which are shorter in elevation but still provide some of the same views.

Again the atmosphere of Disneyland greets you. A little county music in the background, style turn of the century... it's just great!

Also the gift shop is pretty attractive.

There were many horse ranges in the area just north of Durango going along the Million Dollar Highway (US 550). Some of these ranches are guest ranches.

Mesa Verde is definitely worth a visit. (I haven't been there since the fire.) Make sure to do a tour of either Cliff House or Balcony House.
