Things to Do

Golf at Elevation

Golf at Elevation, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  Want to hit the ball really far? Try golf at Keystone. There are two courses in the resort; the Ranch Course (designed by Robert Trent Jones) and the newer eco-sensitive River Course. Both are beautifully situated with fantastic views. Greens fees are pricey but you can get...

The Ski Tip Lodge: Pssst, don't spread this around!, Keystone

johngayton Says:  This is special - if you don't know it's there, you'lll never find it by accident, tucked away just off Montezuma Road, and not particularly well signposted - it's a little gem awaiting discovery. Shucks, I just am too good to you guys here on VT, sharing my new-found little...

Alpenglow Stube: At 11,666 feet, the highest in North America, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  The Alpenglow Stube has been on my radar screen for several years, but quite frankly out of my price range. This AAA Four Star rated restaurant is also determined by Zagat to be Colorado's seventh top dining experience. You begin your dining adventure by taking two gondolas...

Nightlife

Snake River Saloon: The Snake in the Dark!

Snake River Saloon: The Snake in the Dark!, Keystone

johngayton Says:  This is where it all happens here in Keystone - drinking, music, dancing, dining and more drinking! There are plenty of other bars in the resort but this is my personal favourite and has a good mixed clientele and when it gets lively it gets lively. Good service (provided...

The Inn: A Barman Who Remembers Your Drinks

The Inn: A Barman Who Remembers Your Drinks, Keystone

johngayton Says:  Not quite sure whether this qualifies as casual dining or nightlife, but this I was impressed with. Dropped in for a couple of drinks on the Thursday, had a bar meal - wings and superb crab cakes, went back on the following Monday (?) and the barman remembered exactly what...

Transportation

Summit Express

Summit Express, Keystone

johngayton Says:  With thanks to a new member - skitraveler (yep one "l") it seems that CME now have a bit of competition in Summit Express. I haven't used the latter but it seems they run a 2-hourly scheduled service to and from DIA and are a bit cheaper than CME.Here's the website anyway:

Keystone Shuttle

Keystone Shuttle, Keystone

Skitraveler Says:  Another shuttle company based in the Mountains is Summit Express. They operate shuttles every two hours from the Denver International Airport to Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain. For my trip to and from Keystone they were on time and seemed to be very reliable....

Convenient Shuttle To Keystone Colorado

Convenient Shuttle To Keystone Colorado, Keystone

JenniferBreck Says:  Another option outside of Colorado Mountain Express is Powderhound Transportation for those looking for a shuttle to Keystone. They are usually more expensive than CME for individuals however for groups they can usually be quite a bit cheaper. Powderhound offers private...

Shopping

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory: Chocolate!

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory: Chocolate!, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  While this chain store can be found all over the US, where is more appropriate than here in the middle of the Rockies? All sorts of homemade candies and chocolates. My favorites are the Peanut Butter Buckets.... kind of like super gourmet Reeses PB cups! Pretty...

Lakeside shops: All your Mountain accoutrements

Lakeside shops: All your Mountain accoutrements, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  All along the lakeside promenade are shops as well as restaurants. YOu can buy anything frim ski wear and gloves to resort logo items. There are perhaps a dozen shops to attract your attention and capture your dollars.

Local Customs

Any Excuse To Take Photos Of Pretty Girls!

Any Excuse To Take Photos Of Pretty Girls!, Keystone

johngayton Says:  Every year Keystone holds its own little Mardi Gras parade, which OK ain't gonna challenge New Orleans, but this is a bit of fun in its own right! Unfortunately on the day of the parade the weather was unseasonably warm and so the pics of the girls weren't as "sharp" as they...

Relaxing Lakeside

Relaxing Lakeside, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  Lorna and Jill relax and share a beverage at one of the cafes along Keystone Lake. In summer, it's a pleasant way to while away the afternoon, enjoying the sun and the flowers at the lakeside village. If that sounds to boring, rent a canoe or paddle boat and get out on the...

Warnings and Dangers

Cooking Beans at 9,500 ft!

Cooking Beans at 9,500 ft!, Keystone

johngayton Says:  We all know that cooking at altitude takes a bit longer because water doesn't boil at 100 degrees Celsius any more - something to do with air pressure. So here's me deciding to cook pea and ham soup - it takes about 4 hours all told, as opposed to about 2 hours max back...

Changing Weather Conditions

Changing Weather Conditions, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  The weather in the mountains can change amazingly fast. Within the space of an hour it can go from sunny and bright to stormy/rain/hail/thunder/snow and back to sunny and bright. The temperatures dip well into the negative (fahrenheit) numbers.Typically in the summer there...

When the wine rack is empty.............

When the wine rack is empty............., Keystone

johngayton Says:  ..............then its time to pack! Yep, winter stuff at the bottom. In the side pocket of the small bag. Including rechargers, adapters and etc. all at the top. Hey, let's not get carried away! Just double check that the passport is where it should be!

Off The Beaten Path

Take a walk up the Snake River.

Take a walk up the Snake River., Keystone

johngayton Says:  With the arrival of spring in April, a little later in the year than elsewhere given the 9,500+ ft elevation, the snow finally begins to melt and the river actually becomes liquid for the first time. The waterfall at the back of the condo, which previously didn't exist,...

Loveland Pass - The Continental Divide

Loveland Pass - The Continental Divide, Keystone

Callavetta Says:  Driving up Highway 6, past Keystone and over the Loveland Pass, you will reach the 11,990 ft. summit and a point on the Continental Divide. All watershed on the west side goes to the Pacific and on the east side goes to the Atlantic.

Here's Something I Never Thought I Would Write, Keystone

johngayton Says:  I never thought I would write an actual sports travel tip in which I am actually participating. I have written a sports tip on my Budapest page, and I suppose I was participating, but in a very idiosyncratic fashion.I suppose there is a first for everything and here it is!I...

Warm Sunshine

Favorite thing: I'm not a fan of packages as a general rule but I would book my trip "out west" through Keystone directly. It seemed to be more economical to get our condo, tickets, air fare and car rental done all through them.

Fondest memory: There is definitely alot of sunshine in Colorado in the spring. I enjoyed being able to ski in the warm sunshine. That doesn't happen often in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula.
