Favorite thing: If you need cash when you are in Nederland you can use the ATM at Peak National Bank. On S. Hwy 119 and Rental way the ATM is inside the bank where it is nice and warm on those cold days. The bank charges a $1.50 service charge in addition to any charges your bank may levy.
You must first remember this is Nederland Colorado USA. It is not in Europe. Nederland is a funky, tiny little town in the mountians west of Boulder. It is very small. There are a few restaurants, cofeeshops and bars where the majority of the areas people hang out. Bluegrass music rules here and is played live by various local acts and a few national ones sometimes come up and play to packed crowds of 50 or less! I would just take people up to the town and let them decide what they want to do. You can see the entire town on foot in less than an hour. But don't think that because it is so tiny, there's nothing to do-unless you're a city slicker and then I guess you're at a loss. Most people are outdor types and look like it! The men most likely will all have scruffy beards and flannel shirts while some of the women may too. Just kidding. Being outdoor folks you won't see too many people around town during the day-it's mostly just tourists in the day but at night at any one of the bars (I'd check them all-sometimes a band plays and one of the bars may be full and the others completely empty) You can find the locals shooting pool, drinking the strong local beers and coffee while sharing their day. We like to be outdoors as much as possible so we go hiking, mountain biking, climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing and skiing (the local hill is a fairly large gem called Eldora - http://www.eldora.com ) Anything to keep us out of the indoors. If you don't like being outside, Colorado itself just isn't right for you.
Fondest memory: Mostly the friendly people and neighborly atmosphere I miss when I am away. But everyone seems to know everyone else that live in the mountains. We stick together and help each other when necessary.
It may seem like a rough and tumble town but underneath that gruff exterior is a heart of gold. Hmm I think there's a song in that!
